    An Windows Home image for previous generation consoles (only for new generation consoles...

    Dear Microsoft,

    I would like to start a discussion about something that came to my mind recently: Why not build an Windows Home image for previous generation consoles (One, One S, One X) and entitle owners of both a previous and new generation consoles to use it?

    I think your brand would get a lot of love from the community by doing this:

    1) For people who want a console and a home computer, buy a new console would be a blast. Not only you would have the newest and best console but also an upgrade on your home computer. Older consoles can turn into very capable home computers even by today's standards;

    2) Even if you have no interest in using your old console as a computer, it would make it easier for you to make the upgrade for these old consoles, now with the option to run a desktop operating system (as long as the buyer owns a new console), would have A LOT more 2nd market value.

    In fact, I think Microsoft can create so much value to old consoles by doing this they can even claim a piece of that pie by charging a reasonable value for this Windows license. Up to US$29.99 would be great, from US$30.00 to US$50.00 would be acceptable.

    There's also an environmentalist argument to make, as you can give an afterlife to a device that's outdated for its primary function.

    Looking forward for thoughts from both Microsoft and the community.

    Best regards,

    :)

    While I cannot confirm the numbers you showed on your post, you are right on how things work.

    But either I was not clear on my post or you didn't get my idea. The core of it is:

    1) Only previous generation consoles would have the option to run Windows desktop;

    2) Only owners of both a new and previous generation console are entitled to use it (only in the previous generation one).

    By doing this way, most of the people who would benefit from it are people, like me, who are committed to Xbox and Microsoft and just want to give a good use to the old console when they buy a new one.

    The problem is the sheer amount of work that would be involved in creating a Windows environment that would work on the console. Desktops and laptops are much more complex than a console and so have the ability to handle much more complex things like Windows

    Not to mention the on-going work involved in fixing bugs etc...that's assuming they could even create something good enough to work as a desktop system

    I agree that it would be a good thing in terms of recycling etc but I doubt anyone at MS would have the appetite for it given the amount of work and expense involved

    The Xbox operating system is already windows at its core. The console is more than capable to run windows desktop and the only thing preventing it is the Microsoft lock.

    Fixing bugs, etc would not be a big issue, since all the consoles (of each type) have pretty much the same hardware.

    The challenge I foresee is about security, for example preventing non-entitled consoles to receive the Windows image, among other things. But even this is not very hard to overcome.

    I think the appetite could come from the massive value added to the product.

    Why? That would be a losing proposition.

    MS and console makers make Money on games and subscriptions not you downloading from other services like steam or epic

    They'd be losing money

    Steam charges devs 30%

    Vs if you buy from xbox store they get 30%

    Also pc games don't support consoles they are written for multiple devices but not optimized because they are aimed at generic hardware with two choices nvidia or amd and Intel and amd for cpus

    Consoles are closed ecosystems

    Computer os support multiple

    Consoles are optimized for hardware and games they that use their libraries not third party ones like steam

    Everytime you buy games or subscriptions from xboxor ps or switch you are supporting the console

    You buy from steam or epic you pay steam 30% and the devs NOT the console

    Consoles are sold at a loss with subscriptions and games making up the costs

    So everytime you suggest supporting a non supported storefronts on a subsidized hardware you aren't helping development

    You are talking about 1000 dollar of hardware priced at 599 but in bulk millions of consoles vs you buying to one pc everytime you buy an xbox or ps game you are supporting the future of your console and your devs not steam

    With pc you pay 100% of the cost upfront steam.does.not pay for hardware or servers that's upto your devs
