    Tiled Resources Discussion

    Seems everybody is banking on tiled resources as the key to XB1 architecture. But nobody really seems to be able to explain this sufficiently, and I have a bunch of questions:



    1) Is only XB1 capable of utilizing tiled resources? I thought I read that PS4 had the same capability in it's hardware, although they call it something different (due to copywrite).



    2) If they are both capable of this, then why wouldn't PS4 utilize this even more effectively with their faster video ram? What makes the XB1 implementation of tiled resources so much better?



    3) Does tiled resources really negate the need for fast video RAM? So the top video cards are going to be going away from GDDR5 back to GDDR3 in the future?



    I've read numerous articles and blogs on this now but not sure I am buying into this. Are there any games out on the market anywhere that utilize tiled resources?

    When developers get past the pain of using eSRAM - it will have some extra benefits. The performance gap isn't that much really, and the gap will be closed as the system is updated and used more efficiently. Fact is, it's all about games on console, the
    'master race' has, and will continue to laugh at these debates.

    I don't think esram is such a problem, the 360 had edram which worked in much the same way, it's just esram is meant to be used in a different way again, i think that's the problem, once they realise that it should be loads better. They have not even started
    using the special co processors or offloading to the audio chip yet, think of the extra resources available then.

  6. Esram is definitely holding developers back. Even Respawn have gone on record recently stating such.

    As the SDKs continue to update, the use of ESRAM will be seamless.

    Wanorios how is a dev coming out and saying its the EsRAM speculation???? respawn have said it even the guys who are making sniper elite 3 said the first 6 months was hell for them coz they didnt think they would be able to use it but now they have solved

    N7 the message is mixed, sniper elite dev said the problem is that it is hard to get 1080p using only 32mb ram.

    MS said that ESRAM is very similar to EDRAM so the devs having an issue with ESRAM is not accurate, they reported that a while ago. they also said:"we intentionally didn't target the highest graphics on x1"

    It seems there are different root causes for the graphic limitations, one day it is ESRAM, another it is GPU and another X1 is designed not to target highest graphics.

    Maybe Dx12 will help, maybe not, i sure hope it does; but until i see real results it is all speculations to me

    You guys do know that the CPU does a whole lot of work also, it's just not the picture on the screen that is the video game. There is also a ton of stuff going on that the CPU does.

    I don't know if my fellow xbox'ers noticed or not that Respawn had an interview with Digital Foundry and they confirmed that the xbox gpu is based of Bonaire which is not the newest gpu technology. So a lot of misterx's stuff is conspiracy at it's best.
    DX12 will help with optimizations but, it's not going to magically fill a hardware performance gap between the 2 consoles.

    none of the interviews where respawn confirms that it is based on bonaire, it is digital foundry stating it not respawn

    If its not confirmed by Microsoft themselves. do not trust any other site about that. ESPECIALLY digital foundry.

    Respawn never said the X1 GPU was based on Bonaire, and they didn't design the X1 or its components, they just work with what they are given.
