Am I the only with with nothing but problems?

Mav, I would definitely give support a call and let them know you're having issues with your ODD (Optical Disc Drive). It has been a known issue with the system, my first one had that grinding sound and wasn't reading discs because the drive was misaligned.
Ya, I think you really dodged some bullets with the 360, that or I just caught all of yours, lol. I went through so many, between RRD's, bad disc drives, HDD failures, and fans going out that overheated my console...it was bad times, but I never stopped
loving the system.

UC, I'm sorry you're too short sighted to see what it is they're doing. I admit I was frustrated at first and I do agree with you to an extent, it would be safer to just build on something you know rather than trying something brand new. And I only give
them credit in that they were trying to take it to the next level. It just sucks that what they tried didn't work. And again to their credit, at least they heard the complaints and did something about it and dialed it back. If you're still having issues
with the chat system now, all I can tell you is, your doing it wrong. It's almost exactly like it was with the 360 with the exception that you now default to a party and start throwing out invites right away, which can be it's own hurdle sometimes but is
a cool feature nonetheless.

 

I beg to differ, Ben. I am not short sighted in the slightest bit. I'm frustrated, annoyed, angry and kind of heartbroken. I get where they're trying to go and like I said I do see the potential but there's no reason for the system be this much of a mess
6 months in.

As for me doing it wrong, I can assure you I am not. I'm not a child and I have more than a firm grasp on technology and how it works. Things are NOT the same as it was on the 360. I guess the 100s of other people here posting about chat issues, etc, they're
doing it wrong too? Give me a break, man.

The only thing MS tech support tells you to do is a hard reset. That's there go to fix for just about everything. I've probably hard reset my system nearly 3 dozen times since launch. That cannot be good for it.

It's one thing to play nice and say 'give them some time to work out the kinks.' I get that. It's the logical thing to do, but that doesn't make anything less frustrating right now ... and it certainly doesn't mean that they should get a pass because they
tried something new that's not currently working properly.

I know you're speaking out of passion and I appreciate that. So am I. The one thing I won't do though is sit back and pretend everything's okay when it's not.

 

UC, I'm not sure what trouble you're still having with the system that they haven't already addressed or are addressing in a coming patch. I guess that's what I'm unclear on. I do agree with your frustration and I really am not giving them a free pass.
The thing is though I have been a first adopter several times over my 40 years of gaming and I guess these first adopter issues are just old hat to me. Every time they come up with something new, I feel my jaw clench. I know "New" means "Untested" which
equals "headache". The more and more they toss into these things, the more complicated they make them, the worse the experience becomes.

Now some dodge the bullet, because lets be real here, as many people that get on here and whine about it, there are 10 times as many people that are having no issues at all and this experience has been nothing but pleasant. I really wish we could all be
that, but that's just being unrealistic.

What it comes down to is this, it's new and new stuff has issues. What matters is how the company stands by their product. Do they listen to their consumers? Do they have a smooth process to fix issues as they come up? If they don't deliver on the promises
they had when they previewed it, what are they doing to fix that? This is what it comes down to. So what I see is busted apps and missing features, and then every month I see them putting out patches and fixing those apps and bringing back those features
we miss. So credit where credit is due I guess.

 

I will write back about their answer. I have 2 friends that also have the system and none of them work correctly. One guy had his less than a week and all he gets is an orange light on the PB. He tried everything they said, the only time he got it to work
was when unplugged the cat 5 cable and the turned it on. Had to be coincidence though cuz it never worked again , besides what would that have to do with anything? My other friend plagued with the same issues s everyone on here. I have yet to meet one single
person online or otherwise that has said mine works perfectly. No one. That's not oh it's new it's gonna be a little buggy. That's just terrible terrible performance after the 360 debacle? WTF are they thinking?

So if I have the same problem as you did then that's just a production issue that just makes it worse. All this pre-sale,talk about customers being first and how great the warranty is gonna be blah blah and a lot of stuff is shoddy construction AGAIN???

Agreed. Honestly the only thing that really bugs me is all the problems with chat. The April update fixed a number of the other issues I was having but here's the thing... I've been gaming for around 35 years, so I'm guessing we are around the same age,
and yes I've suffered through many woes of early adoption several times, but I'm hard pressed to remember a time in which the OS felt like such a blunder. It feels as if there's no infrastructure as everything is an app. Even the controller needs to be updated
like an app.

The Kinect is a huge part of the Xbox One experience. Major integration. Yet it doesn't even work that well. I couldn't care less what it's watching or listening to, I just want the thing to work especially if it's an integral part of the system.

This new OS seems more like a throwback to the PS3's (and that was as awful as they come). It doesn't feel innovative or next gen. It feels like taking 2 steps backward to take 1 forward.

I want to love the Xbox One but it's quickly leaving the same rancid taste in my mouth that I had when I "upgraded" from the PS2 - which I loved - to the PS3 which was the most expensive paperweight I've ever bought.

Really it comes down to time. I do agree with you though UC, the jump from PS2 (my favorite system of all time) to the PS3 was like jumping from 360 to a Virtual Boy. It was that bad. I had my PS3 for a week before I gave it to my brother and never looked
back. And then a week after that he had to send it in and get a new one, lol. It took years for them to get it right with the 360, and all I can hope for this time is a slightly shorter time frame on working out the kinks.

Mav, that's really not surprising. The PS4 and the X1 are built on almost identical platforms so the fact that they're having similar programming and hardware issues really doesn't come as any surprise. What I find hilarious is the options you have on
both sides for swapping out your unit if something comes up. With the X1 they can email you a shipping label in minutes and have you box up your unit and get it out the same day or you can do the advance exchange where they send you a new one off the bat
and you just use the same box to swap them out and all it takes is a CC hold till they get the old unit back. As where at Sony you have to do a standard exchange and you have to wait for them to send you the packing materials to ship it off. My buddy at
work has been waiting on his coffin and shipping label for 3 WEEKS now. I just find that astonishing that that is the only option they give you. Like I said before, I'm ok with things going wrong this early, it's to be expected, what matters is how the company
responds and the quality of service they give to make it right.

 

Incomplete system is an incomplete system. The logic used is that we should look at what the Xbox 360 was when it first came out. Todays Xbox 360 and dashboard are MASSIVELY different. The same thing will happen with the Xbox One. Ok, I understand that
logic completely, but here is the problem. The Xbox One should be starting where the Xbox 360 left off, and not as if the 360 never existed. I feel like we just went back nearly a decade.

I love Xbox and have never been a PS fan despite having owned all of them. Much like the OP I have supported and owned Xbox's since the initial launch of their first console. I have been a member of live since it was first released as well. I have purchased
in excess of 5 Xbox 360 systems, 3 regular Xbox Systems, and of course the Xbox One on launch day. It is abundantly clear that the Xbox One was rushed to market. Rushing a product to market only means that while initially you will keep up with your competitor,
if you don't get things up to par quickly you will find yourself falling behind in the long run. That is where we are now. Xbox One needs a MAJOR update very soon or many people will not come back.

 

And that right there is what's wrong with the consumer base. Everyone is under the impression that the X1 is some sort of "evolved" 360. It's not, and it was never supposed to be. It's built on a completely different platform from the ground up. This
is something entirely new. The hardware platform is a Power PC platform, not a 64-bit platform like the last 3 gens, it's got a completely different OS, and a completely different programming structure. It's like comparing a PC made today to an iMac made
a decade ago. It may have similarities in the they're supposed to function, but they aren't the same.

Now does that excuse the problems it's had so far...not entirely. But give credit where it's due, it's innovative and when it works, it runs like a dream.

 

I get that it is completely new and I really like the system. However, from the standpoint of function and apps it isn't even close to a 360. My point is that they are slowly releasing patches to make it more user friendly like the 360, and they are slowly
releasing apps just the same as the 360. They are still trying to get to that baseline function. They should have had that baseline established when it launched.

 

Well I suppose that's true, they could have sat on it for another 6 months to a year and taken some extra time to polish it. That however would have been an idiotic business decision though. They had to put it out when they did because if the last 13 years
are any indicator, he who launches last, losses. PS2 came out before Xbox V1 and we all know who the winner there was. 360 came out before PS3, and the rest is history.

 

An idiotic business decision is to release a product with so many problems. When i talk to my mates about console gaming they laugh at the xbox one and point to all the issues people are having. The console is starting to get a bad reputation because of
these issues.

 

Then it only makes sense to turn around and laugh right back at PS4 for all of their issues. This debate is tiresome. Both of them are decent consoles with a lot of potential, and both of them have a long way to go. I may be on my third console, but for
the last few months she's been running like a champ, zero issues. My PS4 just blue lighted on me, so I get to wait for them to send me a coffin so I can send mine back, this should be fun.

This is part of being a first adopter people. Don't like it? Then don't buy it. No one twisted our arms.

And again gurgey you illustrate the problem here. It's a lose lose situation for MS. Come out now and at least give the people something, or wait a year and fall so far behind you can't catch back up. All the great exclusives go to the other guy, the
production contracts go to the other guy, and since there is no such thing as a perfect launch then you have to compete with the other guy going into V2 and becoming even better while you're still working out gen 1 bugs. Anyone who has any business sense
at all understands that MS had no choice. They had to release when they did. So no, it wasn't any idiotic decision, it was their only decision.

And it's all a moot point anyway. If we were really going to get all pissy and throw our xbox's out the window and jump ship to being Sony fanboys, we would have done it already and we wouldn't be complaining about it here.
