Alternate MAC Address problem with hotel wifi

I've seen a few threads on here detailing the problem, yet I have not seen any solutions. Enough of us are having this problem, it should be addressed. After the February firmware update, using the alternate MAC feature DOES NOT WORK when on wireless
internet. Either a patch allowing us to use internet explorer in order to accept terms and conditions needs to be created, or the bug needs to get fixed!

i have seen solutions regarding clearing the alternate Mac, which of course I have tried (a half a million times), but the alternate Mac must be in place in order for the console to connect to the network.

Someone please help escalate this issue to the appropriate people!

XBox One February Update - Multiplayer Bug with Alternative MAC Address

I ran into this bug over the weekend trying to connect X1 over WIFI at hotel since you need to spoof the MAC address of the computer that registers with the hotel. Everything on the system itself connects fine but no multiplayer games work. Fortunately,
I had an ethernet cable that I was able to use and once I switched over to wired everything worked great. I assumed the hotel was blacking over wifi until I did some searching on the Internet.

Being an infrastructure IT guy I was perplexed by the problem so I started digging into it which I deduced it to the alternative MAC address as well.

- wifi with alternative MAC does not work in games but system is ok

- ethernet with alternative MAC works

So what I did was spoof the xb1 MAC address from my laptop and registered it with the hotel which worked.

 

Connecting from a hotel/requiring visiting their page to input password

Most hotel online agreements are MAC address based once you accept the terms. You can use an alternative MAC address for your Xbox.

What you do is login to the hotel internet with the cell phone wifi, and then boot up your Xbox using the cell phone's MAC address. Just make sure to disable the cell phone wifi prior to full boot up.

 

For this feature, you must accept the Terms and Conditions for the wireless internet on another device such as a laptop, tablet, or a cell phone, and then set the alternate MAC address on the Xbox One to the MAC Address of the device that accepted the terms
and conditions. At that point, you can connect on the Xbox One.

 

Thanks for your reply. That has ben my preferred method for years, and it still works with hard wired internet. On Wifi, like I said in my post, does not work ever since the February update.

 

It should not be a problem with the update as I have walked many people through this and had it work since then. If you believe it is the update, I would recommend restoring your Xbox One to factory defaults and try setting it up again. This may resolve
the issue if it is related to the update. Another thing I would recommend would be to try using another devices alternate MAC address other than the one you have tried using, if you have not done this already. Lastly, I have had some luck, depending on the
ISP, with contacting the hotels ISP and having them grant access to the Xbox One console using the IP Address for the console itself.



EDIT: Are you able to connect at all using alternate MAC Address? The normal issue I see is that people can use apps and watch Netflix, but will be told they have no internet connection when trying to use online multiplayer. That issue I know was related
to an update, but I believe it was fixed since then.

 

Your edit hits the nail on the head. I spent the last week watching netflix, as did 6 other pilots I work with, only because the hotel we stayed at only has wifi. I've restored factory defaults, tried iPhones, iPads, laptops, blackberrys.... No internet
connection when attempting multiplayer server connection. It has NOT been fixed, at least as of 4 days ago. If you or someone can confirm that microsoft is acknowledging the problem and working to fix it, fine. The dozens of blogs express the same issue
I have had with tech support - "this is a hardware problem, not an update problem. Please send in your xbox for repair". So the 32 pilots on my team should send our machines in because we all have identical problems? Nope.

[/quote]It was just in my normal daily interactions with Xbox customers. I have not ran into the issue since shortly after the update and the customers who had the issue no longer had it. I don't have a source of a documented fix, however.

Wich update are your referring to?

 

@taidara - The interactions are related to my job, which I can't really say what it is on here.

I believe it was the April update that I first received calls about the issue. I have not ran into the problem since that first week after the update.

 

@ZeroAvix - This issue derives from the update, released in early February this year and not the April update.

One console, went to Settings > Network > Advanced Settings and set the Alternate Mac address to the Mac address of the device that we connected. At that point, we ran the Network and Multiplayer connection tests. After the tests came back positive, we tested
by launching an app or a game.

Sure. These are the exact same steps I've always used and have not had success with since February, but I haven't tried it since two weeks ago. Next opportunity will be tomorrow evening, will report back.
