Thank you for coming to the Xbox forums. I'd be happy to explain the "free" gamertag change. When you create your Xbox profile, you have the option to choose whatever gamertag you want as long as it is not taken. You will be given the option to choose from
a list of pre made gamertags or you can make a custom one from profile creation. Choosing either one of these options constitutes as your "free" gamertag change. If you already had an active Microsoft account and sign into an Xbox platform, the account will
be given a default gamertag and that is when you can go in and change your gamertag to another one of your liking.

Unfortunately, if you are being charged for a gamertag, then you will need to pay the price and there is no way to circumvent that.

you are just going to have to change your name to something else then change it back so two paid changes but is it really that important to you to cost 20
