alt tab and turning off fullscreen cause black screen in some games

Hi,

What games are crashing? Some, or all of them?

Games from the Windows Store (or Game Pass) either have Fullscreen Optimization enabled by default or run in Windowed Borderless mode which shouldn't cause games to crash when attempting to ALT+TAB.

You can check whether Fullscreen Optimizations are enabled or not by opening the Xbox Game Bar via Win+G. If you are running in Fullscreen Exclusive, then the display brightness may be flicker. If you are in Fullscreen Optimizations, the Xbox Game Bar should pop up as an overlay.

Sounds more like a graphics driver issue to me.

Windows Apps can not have Fullscreen Optimization disabled as it's not possible to access their exe file to disable them.

I HAVE MADE SOME PROGRESS!

1. Disable/disconnect all secondary monitors. If your system is a laptop like mine, use the built-in display.

2. Go to windows display settings and set display scale to 125%

3. Launch the game through its app, not the xbox app or microsoft store

4. The game actually BOOTS to the main menu!

5. The game defaults to a weird arbitrary resolution in "windowed fullscreen" that doesn't fill the whole screen (1536 x 864p)

6. Switching to windowed mode causes the game to immediately crash.

7. Using "alt-tab", "ctrl-alt-del" or any similar function to suspend the game similar causes an instant crash

8. The game CAN be played on secondary monitor by switching to fullscreen mode and connecting the monitor AFTER it starts.

I'm going to forward what I've found so far to obsidian and private division. That's all the unpaid beta testing I can do for now but hopefully someone finds this info useful.

i wouldnt mind having it have an option to be a smaller window in the top right of my screen and i can tab it to full screen like alt tab on the pc with the back button so i can flick between 2 fullscreens sorta thing rather than have to middle button and
press b a lot or finding the app along the bottom, i am sure the xbox can do it if it can have it at the side of my screen aswell as it is that bar dominates nearly half of my monitor lol :/

Games like Forager and Children of Mortia only have a fullscreen option, but it keeps popping up. If it is normal, that is 100% fine. With Neon Abyss though, it does not have the top bar or the bottom task bar show up whenever the mouse is hovering near
the top or bottom. Whenever I click in the game, it just alt tabs off the game so I think this is the one of the reasons that game is not working for

I've experienced issues like this in the past and it usually has something to do with a background program. See if there's anything in particular that you have running when it's working compared to when it's not working. Also, alt-tabbing can cause some
inconsistencies with some games. Think back to when it didn't work, did you alt-tab that session prior to recording?
