Yes, you can wait until to subscribe again and you can use your account balance , but, you also need to have a registered payment method, in order to verify your billing address.

You can cancel your PC Game Pass subscription and subscribe to Game Pass Ultimate right now, I'm just not sure if you will be able to get the "trial" period for a low price on Game Pass Ultimate.

As mentioned by others, Game Pass Ultimate has Live Gold, Game Pass console and Game Pass PC and therefore it will not be possible to subscribe to Game Pass PC individually, while it has Ultimate. If in the future you stop being an Ultimate subscriber,
then you will be able to take advantage of specific PC offers.

That would be why you can't redeem it then...from the FAQs in the link I posted before:

"If you were previously subscribed or currently subscribed to Xbox Game Pass for PC, or an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, you will not be able to redeem the two month trial for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate!"

In this case, what I can recommend is to redeem the code on a different account or gift it to your friend or family member.
