  1. Almost 20 hours and still installing a 9 GB update...

Anyone else having this issue? Microsoft said it is an "isolated issue" but I doubt that it is since XBL kept going offline all last night.

Anyone know any tricks on how to get the download to go faster? I was at 85% at 6am today and now at 1:34pm I am at 89% just for a 9gb update. And before anyone says anything about my internet speed/connection; my internet is working properly and has good
    speed.

    :)

  2. Please give suggestions on what to do.

I've now tried to download GTA V about 5 times. They had a 9 GB update and I am trying to download it, but everytime it gets to 84%(which only takes an hour or so) it just stops. It still says it's installing but it doesn't move it sits for hours. HELP?

What would it be better to buy gta 5 from

disc will take 2-4 hours to install, updates are about 29 GB digital so depending on download speed, it could take all night to download the updates, or another 4 hours or so.

you have to install all updates which put it at about 78.1 GB total

It would depend on which time zone you're in, but I was online "all last night" and my XBL connection never dropped... therefore, it very well could still be an isolated issue.

Even if your internet is working properly, it still wouldn't hurt to reboot modem/router as well as do a hard reset of the console, just to rule out any issues you may have overlooked. It's easy enough to do. Also, there have been problems with the recent
updates for those in the preview program and they're network related. Some people have been getting their MTU set to 510, which will definitely cause problems. If you're in the preview program, you may want to check on it.

Other than that, the only suggestions I can make would be recheck network settings to make sure you still have open NAT and decent latency. An issue with either of these could potentially cause problems... more likely with latency.

A trick that I use and it sometimes works is to pause the download (which you'll need to do anyway if you reboot your equipment), wait a minute to 2 and then resume it. I'm thinking that the server the Xbox connects to may start to get a lot of
activity on it and slow it down, therefore pausing the download and resuming it has a chance to connect to a server that has less of a load... at least that's my theory, but I've seen it work. Might be worth a try.

  5. My network is fine and no latency issues. When Live was going off and on last night I tried network tests and every time it was down it kept saying my connection was fine, "probably an issue at our end" meaning Microsoft was having issues.

I did just try a hard restart of the system; turned it off and unplugged it for a minute then plugged it back in and restarted. It finally went from 89 to 90%, but this is seriously ridiculous. Never have I had this kind of issue before with any Xbox one
game or update. I don't want to have to constantly turn my Xbox off and on to get an update to download properly.

  6. Yeah, I've seen the "Probably on our end" message a few times. It can be annoying, but it's fairly rare (at least for me). Rare enough that I definitely wouldn't be concerned with it happening every time I go to download a game, or game update.

The fact that you said you've never had this much trouble before should indicate it isn't something that is typical.

Something else to take into consideration. The Xbox One is, more or less, so close to being a PC that regular restarts, or hard resets are probably just going to become a 'necessary evil'.

I don't use instant on mode, so my console basically gets a 'restart' daily. I have very few problems like the one you've had... in fact, I've had very few of a lot of problems I see complaints about on this forum. Food for thought if nothing else.

  7. Yea, I know it isn't something typical. I think it started as an issue with the servers this patch was coming from as everyone basically had issues in the beginning trying to download at once. I don't know if that has caused another issue that is causing
my game not to full update properly for almost 24 hours now. So far I was able to get it up to 93% by turning off the Xbox, unpluging, replugging then restarting it two times. Now I just now tried a 3rd time and now I am not logging in and getting a "It
might be a problem on our end. We're working on it."

I honestly wouldn't be as frustrated by this if I was still able to play offline single player while this update was downloading or if they just pushed back the release date to fix issues, bugs, ect. that this 9gb patch is supposed to resolve and released
a disk copy that was fully functioning out of the box.

You said Xbox is more like a computer now... and that is the problem. Gaming on a system was never this much of a hassle as it is now a days. Put in game, power on and play. Now you have to be a computer expert to see why your console is not working
properly just to play a simple game. I do not like this direction gaming is going. While Xbox to PC connectivity seems cool it is not worth all the issues that are arising.

As a side note, I work 2 jobs just to make ends meat and I have limited free time as most people probably do. I do not have time to wait days to play a game that I want to play.

are you on wifi or lan? I hook up to lan when downloading games. I think it helps go by quicker than being on wifi.

    Also change your DNS settings.

You DNS settings determine what download server you are connected to.

If you are having really slow downloads then changing DNS can make you connect to a different and hopefully faster download server.

You can do this in the settings app

just go to settings then network then advanced then change DNS to manual

One DNS service you can try is google

Enter 8.8.8.8 for the primary and 8.8.4.4 for the secondary

Press B to save then after the network test has finished restart the console by going to settings then system then select restart now.

Hopefully when console reboots you will be connected to a faster server.

  10. Changing the DNS is not really the issue. You have to consider multiple users are having exactly the same problems around the world and they are all with different ISPs using totally different DNS servers. This is a Microsoft issue. Google the problem
and you will see it's not just an isolated few people who are having the problem.

  11. DNS isn't really something you should mess with unless you know what you're doing anyway. It doesn't always improve your results. The 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 is using Google's DNS servers. That might be better than some peoples' ISP... but it could just as easily
    not be.

I downloaded a basic, free DNS benchmarking app and ran a test on my connection only to find that the DNS servers for my ISP were much better than Google's. In fact, it measured thousands of DNS servers and didn't find any that were better than the ones
    I already use.

Its nothing to do with the speed of the DNS servers. Its the fact that they can connect you to a slow CDN.

Its just an unfortunate fact that some of the download servers used by xbox live are extremely slow.

The server my ISPs DNS connects me to can get as slow at 500kbps sometimes. Its frustrating when you should be getting speeds of over 60Mbps.

Changing DNS can be the difference in waiting just one hour for a download to finish or waiting days.

I agree the fault lies with Microsoft as they should fix their servers. I've reported the problem to them many times using the feedback app and they just dont seem to care enough to fix them. It was actually some one from MS who told me that the server you
are connected to is determined by your DNS.

I agree with you that no one should have to change their DNS but the unfortunate reality is that you either put up with waiting days for downloads to finish or change DNS and hope it connects you to a faster download server.

Ultimately this is a Microsoft problem they should fix but its been going on so long now i'm not convinced they ever will.

  13. Almost 20 hours and still installing a 9 GB update...

True enough I suppose. The main reason I never bothered to actually change DNS and test downloads is simply because I've never really had speeds that were all that bad.

I've had the occasional slowdown, but most of my games download in a reasonable time frame. I suppose I'd be willing to try changing DNS if I were having a lot of slow download problems... but the main reason I benchmarked in the first place was to see if
I could find a faster response speed... because of the typically slow response of the UI.

Since the soon to be released new UI is supposed to be much faster... I might just see if Google's DNS servers make any difference with download speed. But TBH anytime I've done a detailed network diagnostic on the X1, my DL/UL speeds are pretty close to
what my ISP claims they should be, so I don't expect to find any monumental differences.

The speed you get running the detailed diagnostics always connects to a server in Seattle no matter where you are in the word. It is not determined by DNS.

The store downloads and updates all come from various content delivery network(CDN) servers around the world.

The CDN you connect to is determined by your DNS.

You can determine your actual download speed by checking the bandwidth usage in the network app. There is a stat for current usage. Just check current usage while something is downloading. If the speed is a lot lower than the speed listed in the detailed
network stats then you are connected to a slow CDN and may benefit from changing DNS.

If both stats are about the same the there will be no need to change DNS.

  15. This is where we start getting into the whole 'crap shoot' aspect though, IMO. Unless I have something wrong... the law of averages comes into play.

DNS "A" may connect me to servers that will download 343i content faster... DNS "B" may connect me to servers that will download Epic content faster. Or is the content stored by game, as opposed to dev? Or does anyone, aside from those who put the content
on the servers know for sure?

As it stands now, most of my downloads are between 3 & 5 hours (for full games in the 40 - 50GB range) I've rarely had one go more than 6 hours and not many have reached that mark.

I'm willing to try Google's DNS just to see. If I think about it, I'll switch just before the next time I download a game.
