I’m having the same issue. If I get past the screen, it doesn’t read my external HD. Also won’t allow for a restart or a full shutdown without booting right back into this. Tried power cycling several times. Seems like a bad update or something.

This is happening to me , but I'm in the insider's. It's a black screen but if I hold the xbox button it dose show the option to shutdown or restart. If I back out of it my home screen shows. Strange one . 🤔

I'm in ASA insiders, and find it's better to do a Full shutdown after an update,

(2-3 a week). I also have Energy save mode not Instant on and do the updates manually.

It's good practice to do a Full shutdown at least once a week if you use Instant on, imo.

I've had recent issues with noise and disc drive not being recognised on my Xbox Series X and the only way I found to stop this issue is to do a Full shutdown of the console and restart.

Settings>System>General>Power...>Full shutdown.

Its worthwhile removing power cable from console for a few minutes after you shutdown before you restart.

Also, eject the disc before you shutdown.

Just to clarify, "when it turns off to restart", do you mean after the Download and Verifying stages?

If so, when it restarts you should see the console Nexus button flash on and off about 15-20 times, then the screen will show no input before the console then restarts to complete the Applying stage.

If you interrupt the restart manually, the console may not of completed the shutdown correctly and will download, verify again, restart (shutdown/restart) and then complete the Applying stage.

I do several updates a month and the shutdown/restart stage is only a minute or so.

I time it by the Nexus flashes, usually 20.

I've had the exact issue in the last few weeks which I was sure was caused by Insider preview updates and/or Power setting Instant on. My disc drive is not faulty on my new XBSX because after I restart console (Full shutdown) it is recognised again.

I've had recent issues with noise and disc drive not being recognised and the only way I found to stop this issue is to do a Full shutdown of the console and restart. If you find you cannot reconnect to the network after the restart you may have to restart your network hardware also.

Settings>System>General>Power...>Full shutdown.

Edit (1st Oct 2021)... Disc drive on Xbox Series X is no longer recognised at all. Seems it was dying a slow death. This AU$750.00 console is 6 months old and was bought because I have a game disc collection. It is now a brick until it gets replaced.

Its the second time I've bought new Xbox console (Xbox 1 X and now Xbox Series X) only to have some bit of hardware fail within a very short period of time.

Time for some better Quality Control methinks.
