After update to Bluray app, trying to watch a DVD messes up TV?

Just rented something from Red Box. Regular DVD, not Bluray. Put the disk in the drive as I've done a thousand times before on the Xbox One. The app required an update, so I allowed it to go through the update. After the update finished, I then opened the
app. My TV screen blanked out as though it were switching aspect ratios or auto detecting a new input or something, and then I got a "not supported mode" message on my TV. I can still apparently manipulate the Xbox menu with my controller, so memorizing the
buttons I need to press will bring things back to a different menu which will cause the TV to auto-detect again and once again get me a picture, but I am essentially unable to watch movies right now. How do I fix this?

Blu-Ray App Freezing at Blue Splash Screen

I downloaded the system update today and tried to watch a dvd. I was prompted to update the bluray app, which I did in order to watch the movie. But now the bluray app will go to the blue app slash screen and show a little thing that supposed to circle to
show something is loading. But it just sits there, the icon not circling, and then after 2-3 minutes will just kick back to the dashboard. This will happen every time I try to play a dvd tonight. It still plays disc games without issue so it's not a disc drive
problem. Seems like an app problem. Any suggestions on how to fix this? I've already tried restarting, and uninstalling and reinstalling the app both to no avail.

If I am understanding your issue correctly, you are trying to play a recorded BD. Which is not supported. Only regular BD, DVD, and DVD-R/+R is supported.

Sorry to hear about the issues with the DVD. Have you tried another DVD or Blu-ray to see if the issue persists? The disc may be defective or the console may be having some issues reading it.

You can also try to uninstall the Blu-Ray app and reinstall it to see if that helps out.
