'Advertising' query on UK consoles

It has been mostly been game and Xbox related stuff lately here in Australia.

 

I just don't understand the problem with these "Advertisements" 95% of the time they are for a game in the store, a MS product or a promotion xbox is doing with someone else. There is never a pop up, never an interruption in gaming or video playback due
to ads.

You can't away from advertising, its everywhere now so you have to accept it. I paid $11 for a movie ticket and get ads thrown in my face. I don't care if theyre are ads before the "Official" start time, but when they run what we call "Rolling stock" in
with the movie previews then thats annoying. Especially where it was suppose to start at 9:40 and the actual film doesn't start til 10 because of 10 minutes of trailers and 10 minutes of advertisements alternating.

 

Speaking of films and advertising, my brother and I were supposed to catch the 4:50 showing of X-Men: Days of Future Past this evening. We were late and didn't arrive until 5, a full 10 minutes late! Despite being late, the movie itself didn't start until
5:10! There was a full 20 minutes worth of previews! I'm going to start being late to the theater from now on... :|

 

I usually get to see the movies for free since Im the projectionist at my local theater. We do run advertisements before the show up until the advertised start time. Then at the advertised start time the Movie begins with the trailers. Believe it or not,
but theaters are required to put certain trailers on movies based on what the studio requests. Some studios go as far as to send a person on opening weekend to check for proper trailers and count attendance to make sure we aren't letting people go for free.
But when it goes >Trailer>advert>trailer>trailer>advertisement>advertisement>trailer>advertisement>trailer>film thats rude to the paying customers imo. Ours goes >advertisements>advertised start time>Trailers>film. If my theater ever runs rolling stock(advertisements
after advertised start time) I will no longer work there.

 

@Bacon I agree with your first post. I guarantee the OP would be happy with advertisements if he/she won something from one of the promotions.

Like others have said promotion is a way of life, if there was none how would you know of somethings?

I think you're right in a certain respect regarding having to accept advertising, otherwise i couldn't step out of the house or open my eyes. But with the Xbox One i have total freedom of choice at this stage 'not to buy it' as i have known there would be
adverts in some form right from the start, so if i bought it and whinged about it, then i would only have myself to blame.

The thing that really grates me with the Xbox 360 was i bought the console knowing it did not include any adverts in the dashboard etc, but these were introduced with forced updates which was totally out of my control, turning it into a a service that i
came to resent using. But again i had choice to cancel my Gold Service and accept adverts that i'm 'not paying for' using a silver account.

At least this time with the Xbox One i can make an informed choice and weigh up my options regarding whether or not i should accept the volume of adverts which at this time seem to be acceptable for a Silver account holder, but as Azrael008uk has said 'there's
not much point buying if i'm gonna stay silver', so i shall probably hold off for now and see how everything develops as i believe the operating system / service is gonna change dramatically over the next 2 years in response to the competition to help shift
units.

I'm obviously a massive fan of my Xbox 360 as a gaming console, with money burning a hole in my pocket, so you really do have to question why i haven't rushed out to buy the Xbox One ! - Just a thought....

 

I personally don't have a problem with adverts. As others have said, they are part of life now. Click on your favourite game site and I bet there's a few adverts on there. Where I live now during the day a bus comes past once an hour, it will have adverts
on it, not many places you can do now without seeing them.

 

@johnny dont put much stock into Azrael's posts. There is certainly a point to being silver on XB1. Its called playing games. My wife enjoy's plenty games w/o Gold

But you are not paying any money to use a service to click on that certain game site or see that random bus, which i agree that's not a problem and part of everyday life and obviously stimulates the economy.

The ONLY problem i have is advertising placement as an Xbox Gold Subscriber which i personally see as a premium service and shouldn't include adverts whatsoever, and even though this is just my opinion, it is swaying my decision as to whether or not i should
buy this console, and i just hope the advertising revenue justifies customers negative response to it, as i know i'm not alone.

Like you said, it's just your opinion and I'm not bashing you for it, just I have a different opinion.

Like I said, adverts are just part of life now, not many places you can go without seeing them. As for them being on Xbox LIVE, personally I pay my membership to be able to play MP/co-op, party up with my friends/family and the adverts don't stop me doing
any of this so again they just don't bother me.

 

Paying for a service doesnt mean NO advertisements. See Hulu+ as a prime example

Ok, at what point would you find it unacceptable for advertising to be used. Because the way i see it, if people like myself don't make an issue of this and make some sort of stand against it, then it will start to dominate and effect enjoyment of gaming.

Is a 30 second commercial acceptable 10 minutes into a game of Battlefield 4 and then every 15 mins of gaming thereafter.

Is a 5 minute ad break during a live football match acceptable ?

These are just extreme examples, but who knows if we don't do anything to combat it now, may be these will become the norm.

I dont sub to netflix or hulu. Netflix has 0 advertisments that I've seen. But you are essentially comparing apples and oranges. A game having advertisements isnt the same as Hulu or Netflix, I take it you dont have cable either?

 

The thing you use most/last is in the big box on the dash ... from starting up to usually selecting the big box , is a matter of seconds .

Adverisements in my peripheral vision remain mostly unseen .

To deprive yourself of an Xb1 , for such a trivial thing , does not make sense imo.

Even if there were no on screen ads , chances are your house phone will ring .and interupt your gaming ...salespeople I hate em .... unless its Sky , with half price offers ...

 

yeah, i have Sky TV which used to be an amazing service, but cancelled my subscription as they started to make commercial breaks seem longer than the actual programme and even break to adverts about 5 mins into programmes. So i just use their free service
now and have plenty to watch anyway on BBC channels free of adverts.

As for me, i'm gonna wait and see how it all plays out, as i still have 'Skyrim + Expansions' to actually start on my 360 which i know is gonna take me years to finish apparently
