Adding gigabit switch to home network

Hey I hope someone here can share some of their knowledge on when I'm trying to achieve.

First off I stream my xbox one to my pc a fair bit as the other half has an unhealthy addiction to TV soaps. My PC and xbox are connected to my router via Ethernet and for the most part I can stream ay very high settings with no issues. What I do seem to
notice though is that if I have a game update that I try and download whilst streaming I get very slow download speeds. If I do the download and i'm not streaming I get 17-19meg speeds but then I am downloading whilst streaming this drops to 1meg.

I put this down to my sky router not being up to the task of processing so much data (the streaming and the downloading) so I purchased a Belkin gigabit switch.

    My setup is....

internet --> router ----> gigabit switch ----> PC & xbox

First off I tried connecting the xbox to the switch and the pc to the switch, I assumed I'd be able to stream locally without any connection to the router but I couldn't get the pc and xbox to talk to each other until I connected the switch to the router.
On some searching I have found that the router is needed to assign ip addresses to the devices connected to the switch

What i'm wanting to know is with that set up is traffic getting sent from the pc to the switch to the router, back to the switch and on to the xbox when streaming or is the traffic going direct to the xbox from the pc through the switch whilst bypassing
    the router?

I was hoping that putting this gigabit switch in the network would alleviate the streaming traffic that the router had to do and in turn increase my game up[date download speeds when I'm streaming, however this was not the case when I tried to do a test
    download when streaming.

I hope this makes sense to someone haha oh and I'm using 5e Ethernet cables and the link on the switch on both the pc and xbox indicated a gigabit connection.

sorry for the long drawn out story.

    :)

Xbox App Stream from Xbox One issues

    Xbox1 streaming - works sometimes.

    My set up-

I have 4 xbox1's all connected via ethernet wire (cat 5e or >)

(2 xbox1's) are connected via netgear gigabit switch

(2 xbox1's) go directly to gigabit router.

2 computers also connected via gigabit switch.

both computers have gigabit network cards.

    Problem:

Has been working great up until about one week ago. Now randomly getting network connection problems. I was running at medium quality, and then set to low quality but still no difference.

Ran stream test from windows 10 xbox1 app and got 4 green check marks.

Tried restarting all units connected, changed out patch cables to cat 6, changed old gigabit switch to new netgear gigabit switch to match gigabit router.

Frustrating how it works then it does not... Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If the router can't handle the traffic adding another device between the router and your other devices is not going to help because the router still has to handle the same traffic. Does your PC have a GB network card in it and are the ports on your router
    GB ports?

Any traffic that you are passing on the PC and/or Xbox is going through the switch to the router and to the other device. The router is not being bypassed.

    Hope this helps.

Yea I follow you. So even if the xbox and pc are directly connected to the switch all traffic including streaming has to go to the router first then back to the switch? The router is only 10/100 that's why I was hoping the switch was going to deal with local
traffic with devices connected to it directly.

    thanks for your reply

Well, that is a great question. After reading my previous statement again I was not entirely accurate with the way I stated it.

The switch will in fact send the traffic directly to the other device without going through the router. You should be able to send traffic directly from the xbox to the PC. If you are online streaming your games the xbox console will still be using the
router for the internet required traffic thus reducing the speed of the total throughput and that is what I was referring to previously. If you are gaming offline then that step would be omitted.

  7. I have a thread posted about this as well. My download speeds for games are typically 80Mbps but as soon as i start streaming to my PC my downloads drop to 1.3Mbps. I have all gigabit switches/ cabling/router so it is not an issue with my internal network.
A reply on my thread seems to state that the download speeds are intentionally limited while streaming to guarantee low latency which is needed for gaming.

I guess this kind of makes sense but the lack of any info on this from microsoft is frustrating to say the least. Would be nice if they stated this somewhere if this is indeed the case.
