Adding/Changing an email to an existing Gamertag

Long story short.......

Had a friend call today and say he couldn't get into his account even tho everything was correct. He got the recovery password etc. to get it back but we had a problem trying to add an email (non Microsoft) to his gamertag and the only thing I've found is
articles about "adding an email to an offline profile" & "changing a Microsoft email on an account". noting about actually adding/changing the designated email that the gamertag was built on.

Does anyone have an answer/way to fix this?

Changing xbox gamertag email associated is already on a different account

My xbox gamertag is on an old email address I no longer use. The email I am using already has this randomly generated gamertag associated with it. How do I go about changing my old email to the new one? The FAQs all seem to about just adding a new email
but it doesn't account for the email already having a registered gamertag.

Swapping Gamertags?

If you're talking about adding the gamertag to the account with the name "Sharkey xo", then no. You need to pay to change it.

If you want to use the name on an email account that isn't attached to an existing gamertag, then you won't have to pay.

If you change gamertag then no they won't be deleted and will stay with your account.

For email, as long as you go through the process of first adding new email as an alias to your existing account and then making it primary, all should be good. You can change email using the steps mentioned here:

Do not create new account, rather change email of your existing account as per above link.

I think I've cut this down to the key points. Your son had a gamertag you call SB, using OldEmail. You changed the email address; gamertag SB now uses NewEmail, and OldEmail has no gamertag at all.

You changed the gamertag to (we'll say) SB99, so you have gamertag SB99 on NewEmail. At this point, the original gamertag, SB, no longer exists (and could be changed to by any account on Xbox Live if they happen to think up that name).

If you now sign in to Xbox Live with OldEmail, it will generate a new gamertag with the random name as you said, and no gaming history. The old gamertag SB became SB99 (with all the history); SB stopped existing then.
