Adding a fourth controller to a console

I just purchased my Xbox 360 and 4 controllers. The fourth controller will not connect. I disconnected the first three and then reconnected in a different sequence. The balky controller synced, but the 4th one did not. So, it's not any of the controllers.
It's the console connecting the 4th one. Any ideas?

Does the console think there is a 4th controller connected? If so, how can I clear them all out?

Have you tried re-adding (sync) the controller to the console after update? If not, try removing the controller from the console and re-adding it.

Hi there,

sometimes powering down the console and disconnecting it fully from power (disconnecting from wall socket etc) for at least 2 minutes will reset anything related to controller connections.

Thx. I have mud on my face. There was a wired controller plugged in. Console was right. I was wrong. Unplugged it and all four wireless c's connect. Sorry!!
