add switch account to xbox

Yes, you can play fortnite on all the platforms with the same account.

You usually have an Epic account created and linked to your Nintendo switch account.

In order to play with the same account in your Xbox you just need to link that Epic account with your Microsoft/Xbox account

What did you mean by the account you're switching to is not an Xbox account?

To switch account on your console, make sure to add your preferred account:
Press the Xbox button to open the guide. Select your gamerpic in the upper-left corner of the screen, move all the way down and select Add new.

Enter the email address for the Microsoft account that you want to add, and then select Enter...

if you want to add a new account on your xbox, press xbox button, scroll left and select add new

if you want switch accounts between sign accounts, press xbox button, scroll left and select sign accounts

if you want delete accounts, press xbox button, scroll right, select configuration, select account, select delete accounts

The Switch and Xbox have different types of friend's lists, so you won't be able to add his Nintendo account on Xbox and vice versa. If he has a Microsoft account for games like Minecraft, then he should have a gamertag associated with that and you can add that.

I believe that you do not have to add the Nintendo Switch to a list. You have to grant access to the Xbox/MS account, not the device.
