Activity when turned off and not connected to the internet

This is about the fourth or fifth 360 I've had... it's a slim "E" console. But anyway, I turned the console off after maybe four hours of gameplay. About an hour later, I hear a funny noise: it's the console overheating and wheezing like crazy! It's out
in the open, so there's no reason for it to do this. Hot as lava, too. What's even stranger is that the console was turned off and completely disconnected from the internet. I had to yank the cable out of the back to shut it up.

Sadly, I think it is out of warranty by a maybe a month. Please don't suggest any paid repairs because it's not going to happen. I have given the company enough of my money over the years (four or five new consoles from launch until now, plus accessories);
If the thing is dead then it will be my final Microsoft console. The reason why I say "if it's dead" is because I only disconnected it ten minutes ago and will wait for it to cool off before checking.

But just out of curiosity, what problem could make a console behave in such a way?

Background downloads happens when your console is turned off and still connected to the internet. On your console you should see the power button flash around every 30 seconds. You may have the option turned off, if not turn the console off and then turn

Xbox is connected and test is working - but says we are not connected!

Please help! We are connected to the internet and have run the test which says it is successful. BUT when you go to login on live it says we are not connected to the internet!! Have tried to go into settings but it also says we are not connected. Have
resorted to ethernet cable and still can't get on. Have turned off both the internet and xbox a number of times. It started when I tried to login to Fortnite.

 

After pressing the power button, your console 'finishes up' tasks and then enters its low power state (known as "off"). If something is causing your console to not finish these tasks, it could get stuck in a loop, and cause your issues to be happening.

First, I would try to remove the HDD and all accessories. Play a game, turn your console off. See if it happens. If not, then reconnect your accessories one by one (mainly storage devices), and see which, if any cause your console to do this. Counterfeit
HDDs sometimes cause this to happen as the write/read operation never completes, and the console expects it to finish. Some external HDDs that are poor quality or have damaged USB cables also can cause your console to not shut off. Generally speaking, if your
console has sufficient ventilation and isn't old (in terms of manufacturing date), it shouldn't get very hot to begin with.

If you do narrow it down to your storage device, back up your save files and games if desired (but not system files and cache, licenses, etc), and format your drive.
