Activision and Call of Duty to do 3 year development cycles now on.

I guess this could be either good/bad for fans of that series

As many of you may by now Call of Duty is a yearly title made in alternatively by Activision owned studios Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Last year’s Call of Duty titled Call of Duty: Ghosts was developed by Infinity Ward so many would presume that it would
be Treyarch’s turn next.

This is conflicted by reports coming in from Sledgehammer Games’ website (and Linkedin) who are looking to fill 10 or so temporary positions to work “on the next Call of Duty game”. Sledgehammer Games is also an Activision owned studio founded in 2009 and
helped Infinity Ward in the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 alongside Beachhead Studio.

Now if this rumor is indeed true and Sledgehammer Games are indeed working on Call of Duty 2014 then it’ll mean that Call of Duty is now shifting to a 3 year developmental cycle. Sledgehammer Games has not worked on a project after finishing Modern Warfare
3 in 2011.

This cycle would have Treyarch’s next game come out in 2015, their last outing was Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 in 2012.

I personally think this is a great decision and would improve the quality of the games. Call of Duty: Ghosts, to me at least feels rushed and quality of the games has been going down with each installment. The yearly Call of Duty title is announced in the
first half of February so we’ll surely find out what’s going on next month.

Activision switches to three year dev cycle, Sledgehammer takes the wheel

Sledgehammer Games - home to Dead Space creators Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey - will develop this year's "highly innovative" Call of Duty, Activision has announced in its Q4 2013 earnings call.

Rather shockingly, the publisher has also revealed that three developers will work on Call of Duty games in tandem from this point on - Infinity Ward, Treyarch and Sledgehammer. Activision will still release a Call of Duty game every year, which means that
each studio will have three years to develop a game.

i don't see how this would be bad for fans. they still get a yearly milking of the series, but now the games should theoretically be better...

 

I played COD for a very long time up until Black Ops 1 because I got tired of the COD 4 styled multiplayer experience. (Killstreaks/DeathStreaks/Perks) COD 4 was a wonderful game don't get me wrong but I enjoyed the vehicular/class based
experience from COD 3 which was similar to Battlefield. So when Bad Company 1 came out, I found my new love and moved on ... I'm just waiting on the COD game that will bring me back and thanks to this 3yr. development plan fresh ideas and innovation have an
opportunity to blossom once again.

 

I'm glad. Ghosts is quite disappointing.

Plus, Sledgehammer worked on Modern Warfare 3 and I loved it. Bring it on!

 

I'm not really a Call of Duty fan, but I'm not gonna lie. Extinction mode in Ghosts is pretty fun. In fact, I'm still waiting on some forumers around here to go through the new map *cough*hint*cough*

 

Well Im ready willing and able, still waiting on Louie, and Angel didnt get online last weekend.

 

Extinction and bot matches are all I do on Ghosts haha, but its still probably the best one so far since World at War.

 

I like the MP. I do agree it is no diamond, but it does provide. The only thing I usually rant about is the spawn system.

Interesting turn of events. Now 3 developers are taking turns.

 

Hmmm..... well I guess treyarch will have a long time for development. Though I was wanting a next gen cloud powered zombie experience this year.

I doubt they will do anything special with the extra time that they will be given.

Could always look to see if I am on if you need a fourth. I got connection issues that cause constant disconnects from live though.
