accounts confusing me...

are the gamertags automatically given out? do we pick them? our xbox one is new and from setup, it's had 2 diff tags and won't let us create a new one. i'm not sure where the names came from? is there a way to find out?

The first is given when you create an account ,you can pick your own for free once, after that you have to pay,that's how it use to be I believe its still the same.

That's correct. Depending on where and how you set your account up for the first time, the system will generate a random GT (Gamer Tag) for you. It's a random adjective + random noun + random set of numbers.

After you have your account set up, you can do a GT change for the first time (within 30 days of account creation) and change it to w/e you want. After that it's $9.99 per change.

You are correct in that you can't transfer money between accounts. However, as long as your console is set as your Home console, your son should have access to games and content you download on your account.
