Maybe I am addressing things incorrectly. Brand new X box 1 s in box unopened. Tried to register machine using my Microsoft account. My machine addresses me as my email sometimes and other times as an unknown that I did not set. CyanSnail...... (incomplete
account) No idea how this was set at all. Received an email using the weird account number shown incomplete previously. Is this an account number auto generated or is my machine logged into someone else's account? As I may buy games, etc. later using this
account, am concerned that I am not connected to someone else's account. How can I check if this is legit?

Yes, when you switch gamertags to a new Microsoft account, all of your purchased content should transfer to the new account. If you run into any issues, please let us know.
