Hi!

I am the mother of a middle school child, so please forgive me as I am not too smart when it comes to gaming. I am hoping someone can help me. My son's Xbox one live account was hacked by a fellow student whom somehow got a hold of his password. Don't
worry, we have changed password and added extra security measures. Anyways, this student whom my child doesn't associate with, basically harassed him to play a game with him. My son got so fed up, he decided to play to get rid of him. My son was playing
NFL 2K 17 at the time and the kid continued to harass him to play NBA 2 K 17 and agreed to play. When my son switched over, he noticed that his whole My Career Player for NBA 2 K 17 had been deleted! This kid wanted to be the one to show him!! As word,
texts, and investigation around school spread, it is known that this kid did it, but denies it. I know he somehow got his password, however, he viciously attacked my son by deleting his my career player and getting him mic banned for 24 hours. I need to
somehow get in touch with enforcement. Xbox one was able to confirm that my son's account was signed into from another Xbox one on that particular day and even able to provide me with the serial number of the Xbox one that signed into it! Any recommendations
on how to further investigate this so this child can get a suspension or something for viciously manipulating someone's account? Any information would help. Thanks so much for your time.

people don't need to change email address when compromised, they need to change password and make sure they have proper security... that includes not using passwords on more than one service, if one service is compromised all those details are sold.

Someone in another country will pop up with it, even if it takes years to happen. My skype password took approximately 4 years from compromise to have someone log in and use it.

This app makes you click approve when logging into websites, and it's instant once you click "accept" the website will load in normal.

Any devices that don't work with the app like xbox 360 will have you go to website once to create a password (it will generate a password that isn't easy) and you use that on those devices to login with your normal user name.

Last year almost 1 billion got paid out. That was a huge jump from 2015 where only 32 million was paid out. With a jump like that Im sure it will grow even more.

I'm incredibly sorry to see the frustrating experience you and your son are having. The only way to reach out to the Enforcement team is by submitting a

Case Review on their website. The unfortunate side of this is that 24 hour bans are not eligible for a Case Review.

It's good to see that you guys have recovered the account and set up security measures to avoid this from happening in the future. If phone or chat support was able to verify that the account was compromised, they will need to send an Unauthorized Access
case to their Global Escalation Support. We are unable to see that kind of information here.

While it is difficult to think about, middle school kids like sharing their account information frequently, especially when it comes to
Home console settings. Home console lets users share their Gold and digital games they have purchased on their account with other users on the console they set up as that. You
can always check to see if your son's console is set as his Home console by logging into his account, pressing the Xbox Home button on the controller (the big X button in the center) and navigating to Settings > All settings > Personalization > My
Home Xbox. If it's saying to set the console as the Home console, then the situation above may have happened. This is a common scenario when it comes to teens.

The best course of action for your son is to block that other child, and not message him. Messaging a blocked person will unblock them.

Can an Xbox one live account be recognized via the serial # of the Xbox console?

 

Hmmm, depends on what you are asking. If you are looking for an account by giving a console serial number, no, that isn't possible. However, if you are talking about seeing what consoles the account has been on, I believe phone and chat support are able
to see device history. So it's kind of both yes and no.

If I am misunderstanding, though, let me know! I'm happy to clarify or correct myself if needed.

Thank you again for your help. I truly appreciate you taking the time to assist me. I guess what I am asking is, if I know through Xbox help that my son's Xbox live account has been signed into on 3 different Xbox consoles (3 different serial #s) since
he has had it (one being his all the time, another being one of his friend's over February vacation, and the third being the Xbox console that was used to delete his My Career Player forever and got him a 24 hour mic ban suspension at the same time during
the time period he was at CCD, is that enough proof who did it......we know who did it as he has told others as he got hold of my son's password, just want factual proof....because going into sometimes account and deleting information is 1.) fraud, 2.) cyberbullying,
and 3.) a true violation of Xbox live policies. If you can help me on any way, I would be grateful. Thank you again Misses Quinzel!

 

No worries at all! I'm happy to see how invested you are in nailing this down.

With your son's account, phone or chat should be able to see what consoles the account has been on. However, seeing which console his account was on when stuff was deleted is a bit harder. I don't know if they can because I do not work for them, but
2K might be able to let you know what day the content was deleted. With that, you might be able to work with support to figure out what console he was on for that day.
That ends up being a bit more....difficult, though. Then it's speculation and people can be on multiple consoles in a day, but it may be worth trying to get a whole story for you.

If you are working with our phone/chat team and they are not able to help you in a way you are looking for, let me know. If you have a reference number from chats with them, I'll need that; I'll be able to look into other options I may have here.

Side note: If you haven't already, you can report that other boy's account through the console to have them investigate him on the Policy Enforcement side of things.

 

Thank you again so so much! I would appreciate further assistance so much. I am even willing to pay a private investigator through Xbox if I have to. This is how upsetting this is. I have spoken to Xbox with a reference #
[Mod Removed]. Apparently, couldn't be of further assistance. Here is more to the story. You will see in the above named ref # that his Xbox live account is different from this one as I wanted to keep somewhat confidential due to his age.
This one I am writing under is an old account under my information.

My son, (age 13), went off to CCD at 5:00 pm on the evening of March 13, 2017. While at CCD, he received a message from a fellow student who we will call SC whom he hasn't been friends with in quite some time) to play a game on Xbox live with him. My son
told him he was at CCD and could not. When my son returned home from CCD somewhere close to 7:00 pm, SC continued to persuade him to play a game with him. My son finally gave in and said he would, hoping this would get rid of him. My son said he could join
him playing football Madden 2K 17 and SC said he wanted to play basketball. My son told him he would only play football, but after playing a bit, SC continued to harass him to play NBA 2K 17 basketball. My son was getting so fed up, he agreed to play basketball
because he was being so annoying. When my son switched over, he noticed that his whole My Career Player for NBA 2 K 17 had been deleted which he was playing prior to CCD! Not only was this deleted, my son also received a 24 hour suspension for some kind
of bad behavior when this person signed into his account. This kid wanted to be the one also to show him it was gone. Upon investigation with my son and 2 other parents the next day (snow day on March 14), it was brought to my attention that my son had given
his password out to a friend, AS during February vacation. AS admitted to his mom that he gave SC his password because he needed to desperately "fix something for my son," and SC's mom confirmed that her son did get hold of my son's password but "He looked
me in the eye and he didn't do it." This kid is vicious. I have been in contact with Microsoft who has provided me with the serial number used to sign into my son's account on the day of March 13, 2017 and fraudulently deleted material that he spent lots
of money and time on to create this My Career player. According to Microsoft XBox my son's account has only been signed into on 3 different Xbox consoles with 3 serial #'s; one being his own, a second in February on his friends, and the third one on this
day of March 13, 2017 in which his account was violated. Serial # [Mod Removed] was the one provided to me that his account was signed into on the day his My Career Player was deleted and he received his 24 hour mic ban. This is a combination of fraud,
cyberbullying, and violation of Xbox live policies. I, again, thank you wholeheartedly for all your time.

Thanks, Teresa! My son is 3, and I am not looking forward to these shenanigans in 10 years. I also really appreciate your understanding of privacy. I've removed, but logged, your reference number and the serial number just to keep you safer.

I will need you to try reaching out to 2K for me to see if they can confirm that the content was indeed deleted on that day. While everything does line up, I'd need that little bit of confirmation to have others look into the situation here.

When it's confirmed that the password was given out instead of "illegitimately acquired", the situation becomes harder to prove anything because the finger can go back to "don't give out your password". I get that, but I also get the parent side of things
to ensure this child understands there are consequences to his actions. (Your son very obviously got this lesson in giving out his password, but I know teenage memory lasts as long as a toddler's sometimes.) If I am able to at least attempt to have 2K confirm
the deletion for us, it could help our case.

Hopefully that makes sense. There does come a point where we tend to be hands off with these situations, and it's frustrating for me as a parent who believes that online bullying needs to be addressed more. However I'll do what I can to see if we can get
this entire situation sorted out.

Just because I have the key to my neighbor's house for emergencies, doesn't give me the right to go in an rob her, right? You know what I mean. If someone gets another persons password, it doesn't give them the right to do malicious harm to someone else's
account. It's still a violation. Still cyberbullying. I will get back to you. Thanks for all your help and understanding!

Thanks again. I reached out to 2K and unfortunately if the My Career Player is deleted manually as it was, it is just like it never existed. This is so upsetting. What's even worse is I know the date it was so viciously deleted and there is an account
sign in on his account from another console. So frustrating and upsetting to say the least. Any further help and assistance would be wholeheartedly appreciated.

I cannot comment on other accounts, however know that everything has been sent to the right people to investigate further on our side. Unfortunately, this also means that I wouldn't be able to provide updates on the situation. I've done all I can on my end
and it's now in the proper hands.

I still encourage you to file that police report for online harassment like we've talked about, if you haven't already. You've already got the serial number of the console, your son likely has the other kid's gamertag and can help you there. Please keep
me updated on the situation as anything new happens.
