90$ code that was sent from microsoft to my account

I have recieved a 90$ code from microsoft and it wont let me redeem the code the message with the code came from the GT Xbox Live and i recieved the message on April 17th 2016 please help me figure out the problem of why the code wont redeem

i cant sign in!!! help!!

ok, so a while back LIVE sent me a message over xbox live and said that i needed to enter in a security code for my account so no one else could sign in to it. i ignored it. a few days ago i was at my friends house and i couldnt download my account. an error code popped up. now when i try to sign in to xbox live on my computer, it makes me go through all this crap. my email hooked up to xbox live is hotmail and it is microsoft too. i have to enter that stuff in my hotmail account too! Help!

Xbox 360 console

To enter a pre-paid Microsoft Points code by using the Xbox 360 Guide main menu, follow these steps:
Press the Xbox 360 Guide button, and then go to the Marketplace area.
Select Redeem Code.
Enter the 25-character pre-paid code.
To enter a Microsoft Points code by using the Add Points Wizard, follow these steps:
To access the Add Points Wizard, press the X button while you view any content description screen within the Game Marketplace or Video Marketplace areas or while you view the Memberships section in the Account Management area.
Select Redeem Prepaid Card.
Enter the 25-character pre-paid code.

Visit Sign In (Sign In) or follow these steps:
From Xbox.com, use your Windows Live ID to sign in to your Xbox LIVE account.
Select My Account from the My Xbox drop-down menu.
Click Redeem Code to enter the pre-paid code and add Microsoft Points to your account.

it was through an online retailer. the code itself was sent from the Microsoft account team

If you bought it from Microsoft, you're not sent a code. It's automatically tied to your account. If you bought it elsewhere, they should have emailed you a code or sent instructions on where to get the code.

The same issue happened to me also just now. I bought a game code for my little brother and I sent it to one of my emails that is not associated with a Microsoft account. I sent the code from my email to my brother and it had the same error message. I
understand that new updates have arrived and there are security precautions, but please resolve this Microsoft.
