7.1 Sound is not outputting correctly, needs a firmware update.

My Xbox One is connected directly to a 7.1 capable amp and set to output 7.1 PCM uncompressed. But frequently sound is output to the rear back speakers when it should be output to the side surround speakers.

For example Halo Master Chief Collection the game itself does output correctly to 7.1 but some cut scenes are 5.1 only. Which is fine, but the problem being the sound is being output to the back rears and the sides are dead, it should be the other way round.

Castle Storm is 5.1 only and the surround sound is only back rears (even after last title update) and I have to manually set to 5.1 PCM to correct it.

Digging around a few AV forums this is a problem inherent only with the Xbox One. I have no problems with my PS3 & PS4 playing 7.1 and 5.1 with correct speaker channel mapping.

The speaker channel output needs a firmware fix. Manually having to switch between 5.1 and 7.1 should not be necessary, and in the case of Halo which is "both", and the output is wrong. Highlights the issue.

    :)

Xbox 360 Backwards Compatible games not outputting 7.1 audio from HDMI

    Hey there,

The Xbox 360 console doesn't support 7.1 surround, only 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS. Due to this, it is normal that backward compatible games are outputting 5.1 surround. On your Xbox 360 setup, it sounds you have it set up with Pro Logic IIx to simulate 7.1
surround sound, but the Xbox 360 console doesn't support true 7.1 surround sound.

Hope this helps clear it up.

    XB1 Surround Sound Issue

That's simply incorrect. The Xbox One has output surround sound since its release-- DTS and 5.1/7.1 uncompressed multichannel PCM over HDMI. Until the last update, it did not support outputting a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream, which is what is needed
for optical (because optical can't carry uncompressed 5.1/7.1). It does now, however.

OP, it sounds like you are selecting 5.1/7.1 uncompressed, which is not supported by TVs (that is for a receiver (AVR))--and that is why you can't select it when HDMI is set to Auto. Most likely your TV is just seeing it as 2.0 (stereo) audio. You need
to set the Xbox One audio to bitstream with Dolby Digital encoding. Even then, please be aware that very few TVs pass DD 5.1 from an HDMI source out though the optical out. What you may end up getting is virtual surround sound, not true discrete 5.1.

    Audio output setting

I see, thanks for the information. So in order word, my receiver is doing its thing correctly. Right?

I actually have 2 front high speakers and that's why I like to use PLIIz sound mode. What puzzles me is that when I set the Xbox to output Digital Stereo (the receiver will display LPCM48) instead of Dolby Digital 5.1, I will get 7.1 sound all the time.

Does it mean that the receiver processor does not detect any discrete channels, so it just go ahead and simulate to the 7.1 sound that I told it to do? Sorry for the never ending questions.

    TV Tuner Stereo output only?

I'm having the same issue. Only seeing a 2 channel, stereo output. I've tried every surround sound option (5.1, 7.1, bit-stream, surround sound on/off, etc...) and I've changed around the HDMI settings with no luck. The output is only stereo for OTA live
TV. When watching movies or other content surround sound works fine.
