5.1 Uncompressed audio via HDMI connection

I have the following set up:

    A) Comcast cable box connected to Xbox One via HDMI

    B) Xbox One connected to HDTV via HDMI

    C) Vizio 5.1 surround sound bar connected to TV via HDMI (ARC) input

I have enabled surround sound via the Xbox One TV Settings. When I try to switch the audio from "Stereo" to "5.1 uncompressed" (separate settings menu) I get an error saying that 5.1 uncompressed audio is not supported.

I've reached out to support at both Microsoft and Vizio and have been unable to get a clear understanding of 1) if the scenario I'm trying to enable is possible, and 2) if it is possible, what settings could be causing this not to work for me.

Has anyone been able to get one of the Vizio 5.1 surround sound bars to work with 5.1 uncompressed audio using all HDMI connections? Any ideas on other settings? It seems like this might work via an Optical connection (from sound bar to TV), but I'm still
trying to figure out if the HDMI route is supported.

    Thanks!

    :)

Xbox One unable to detect that my receiver supports DD5.1, DD7.1 or DTS

I have changed the TV connection to HDMI and the HDMI audio to 5.1 uncompressed. When I turn on the TV, the Xbox One keeps changing the HDMI audio to 7.1 uncompressed. How do I keep it on 5.1 uncompressed? Thanks

  3. Any of you have surround sound for your Xbox?

here are some hints in regards to setting up your 5.1 speakers, including the Sub which plays a crutial part:

make also sure your xbox audio settings are set to "uncompressed 5.1" surround sound. best way to connect the xbox to your AVR is via HDMI. For setting up your AVR with optimal settings, the respective manual usually helps.

5.1 Uncompressed audio via HDMI connection

It isn't possible for any TV to pass through uncompressed 5.1 audio but they can pass through Dolby Digital 5.1 format which is compressed.

What you need to do is tell the Xbox to output Bitstream audio via HDMI and set the Bitstream format to Dolby Digital. If you do this your TV will be able to send the 5.1 surround audio to your soundbar via its optical cable.

I forgot to mention that in my scenario you would also need to change the setting on the TV itself so that it is outputting Dolby Digital.

It's all a but complicated but I think also that if you change the audio setting as I mentioned above that you wouldn't need the optical cable from the TV anyway. If you have Bitstream out via HDMI in Dolby Digital format then you could just connect the
Xbox to the soundbar via HDMI like you want and it would work.

Thanks. I'll give it another shot, but in the past when I've tried to select the bitstream option under the HDMI audio setting, the Xbox hasn't allowed me to (same error saying my system doesn't support). I wonder if the fact that the Vizio is not a true
5.1 system (in the purest form) means that the Xbox doesn't recognize it as being capable of receiving 5.1 sound. Alternatively, is it possible that the Comcast box (also connected via HDMI) isn't and/or isn't capable of passing 5.1 audio to the Xbox to begin
    with?

After reading some other forums, I changed the Video setting on the Xbox One from "Auto-detect" to "HDMI." After doing this, I was able to select "5.1 uncompressed" from the audio menu on the Xbox without getting an error. However, at
this point, I was getting no sound. After a few hours of frustration (I thought it might be an HDMI handshake issue), I decided to hook my Xbox One directly to my sound bar via an extra HDMI input on the sound bar and then hook the sound bar up to my TV using
my HDMI ARC input. I now have surround sound!

The downside is that when I switch HDMI inputs on the TV, I have to switch inputs on the sound bar as well. I thought the promise of ARC was that the TV would act as the switcher for audio.

I won't complain at this point, but any thoughts on why I would need to hook the Xbox One directly to my sound bar for surround sound to work vs. hooking the sound bar up to my ARC input? When I didn't have a direct HDMI connection between the Xbox One
and the sound bar, I could get stereo uncompressed sound just fine. Is it a limitation of the TV? Could it be an outdated HDMI cord? Any thoughts appreciated.

5.1 Uncompressed audio via HDMI connection

Can you provide an update for your situation? I tried the optical connection first and it worked fine, but hooking everything up using HDMI is not working for sound. Here's my setup...I have a UHD Samsung TV, Cisco cable box, Xbox One, and a Vizio S5451w-C2
sound bar. The Vizio sound bar has a HDMI ARC connection option. I have my connections set up as follows ALL WITH HDMI CONNECTIONS::

Cable box --> Xbox One --> Vizio sound bar (HDMI Input) --> Vizio sound bar (HDMI Output)--> Samsung UHD TV (HDMI ARC)

I can get video just fine using this connection, but NO sound. My TV settings are good to go, but I'm wondering if there is some Xbox audio setting that is the final piece to this puzzle. Currently, my "HDMI audio" is set to "5.1 uncompressed" and "Bitstream
format" is set to "DTS Digital Surround". Does anyone know if these are correct or if there is something I'm missing?

Basically, I want to use HDMI for both video and audio (because it offers the best quality), but the sound is not working for HDMI connection. I chatted with a Samsung rep and they explained that the Vizio sound bar and Samsung TV might not have compatible
versions of CEC (Consumer End Consumption) technology. I'm hoping that's not the case and that the issue is due to some minor setting that I'm missing in the Xbox One settings.

  10. Hey there, BackwoodsRT! The last post that JimmiGenius posted suggested changing your settings to "Auto detect". Give that a try and see if that works out for you. Additionally, check out our

    Surround sound has been fixed?

Mine still changes from DTS 5.1 (or uncompressed 5.1) to Uncompressed 7.1 all by itself.

When I had the TV box connected via HDMI it used to change itself to Stereo.
