5.1, 7.1, and BS Surround Sound not Possible with Video Output Auto-Select (Error: 0x80bd0009)

I have an Xbox One S connected to an Onkyo TX-RZ800 receiver via supplied HDMI cable and a Samsung Plasma connected to the Onkyo. With the video output is set to Auto Select, when I go to select the Audio output settings for the HDMI, I am not able to select
5.1, 7.1 or Bit Stream Output. Selecting any of those options results in a Error: 0x80bd0009. As another poster suggested, the only way to get access to the 5.1, 7.1 or Bit Stream surround sound outputs is to change the video output to HDMI (instead of auto).
However, with HDMI selected, I am unable to get 4K output.

I have dealt with phone tech support and even went to the Microsoft store today with my console. We were able to replicate my issue on my console as well as a store console, which strongly suggests a software issue. Microsoft says there is nothing they can
do, which is ridiculous to me.

I have seen a few other threads around the web about this but no sign of an actual resolution, only the aforementioned workaround.

I wish I had not upgraded. This all worked fine with my Xbox One.

    :)

    XB1 Surround Sound Issue

That's simply incorrect. The Xbox One has output surround sound since its release-- DTS and 5.1/7.1 uncompressed multichannel PCM over HDMI. Until the last update, it did not support outputting a compressed Dolby Digital bitstream, which is what is needed
for optical (because optical can't carry uncompressed 5.1/7.1). It does now, however.

OP, it sounds like you are selecting 5.1/7.1 uncompressed, which is not supported by TVs (that is for a receiver (AVR))--and that is why you can't select it when HDMI is set to Auto. Most likely your TV is just seeing it as 2.0 (stereo) audio. You need
to set the Xbox One audio to bitstream with Dolby Digital encoding. Even then, please be aware that very few TVs pass DD 5.1 from an HDMI source out though the optical out. What you may end up getting is virtual surround sound, not true discrete 5.1.

Error code 0x80bd0009 xbox one x

upgraded to one x and still have the 0x80bd0009 problem. Can't select 5.1 or 7.1 surround white on 4K. Been a major problem for almost 2 years. Xbox is plugged directly into Samsung ks9000 4k tv, and going to the receiver (str1030) with HDMI ARC.

Xbox 360 Backwards Compatible games not outputting 7.1 audio from HDMI

    Hey there,

The Xbox 360 console doesn't support 7.1 surround, only 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS. Due to this, it is normal that backward compatible games are outputting 5.1 surround. On your Xbox 360 setup, it sounds you have it set up with Pro Logic IIx to simulate 7.1
surround sound, but the Xbox 360 console doesn't support true 7.1 surround sound.

Hope this helps clear it up.

5.1 Surround Sound Doesn't Work Properly on Xbox One

I found another piece of this puzzle. I was unable to get surround (stereo sounded OK). Whenever I tried to set HDMI audio to anything other than stereo, I would get an error saying that surround was not supported. All my other gadgets give surround sound
    with no problem.

What I discovered is a problem with *video* output autodetection. Find that setting, switch from AUTO to MANUAL, and choose HDMI. You will have to set up the resolution of your TV manually, and you will probably have to re-engage 3D support if you have
it. NOW go to the HDMI audio selections and choose 5.1, 7.1, bitstream, etc.

Upgraded to Xbox One S now surround sound no longer works (0x80bd0009)

I'm having the exact same problem, I have a "2016 Vizio P Series" television and my sound system is VIZIO SB3851-D0 SmartCast38" 5.1 Sound Bar System (2016 Model) I have tried every conceivable connection combination from connection the Xbox one S to the
sound bar directly via optical cable, to connection the Xbox to the display with the HDMI and then connecting the display to the sound bay with the optical cable, to connecting the Xbox to the sound bar directly with the HDMI and using ARC. And every-time
I receive the "0x80bd0009" error when selecting selecting 5.1, 7.1 or Bitstream audio output. As well if I set the output from AUTO to HDMI, I do gain the desired sound output (which is drastically improved) but my ONE-S is no longer able to recognize the
4k or HDR abilities for my display. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at a complete loss as far as what to try next.
