4K Picture but forced to use DVD quality Sound?

Hi guys.

Despite having an amp that claimed to be 4K compatible (Sony) I came to learn that, now being the owner of a 4K TV and a Xbox One S, I m forced to choose between two scenarios:

1) Play the console in 4K that upscales everything and looks really nice by HDMI directly to the TV, but since my "4K compatible" receiver does not support 4K, I am forced to use an optical cable to have any sound. I can now relive the days of PCM 2.0 with
Dolby Pro Logic 2, the lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 (640kps) or DTS 5.1 (768Kps) and have wonderful lip sync issues.

2) Play the console in 1080p through my receiver and enjoy PCM 5.1 Uncompressed, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. I have been watching Blu-Rays since 2007 and have upgraded my receiver only about three years ago. I have become used to lossless and uncompressed
audio which is far superior.

I wanted to buy a Xbox One X, but now it seems I must buy a new receiver first, or get a working HDMI Splitter - which is virtually impossible. I am not happy with this.....

IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY 4K ON THE XBOX ONE S OR X FOR THAT MATTER I MUST BE WILLING TO ACCEPT TO DOWNGRADE MY AUDIO TO DVD QUALITY WHICH IS A STEP OF 15 YEARS BACKWARD!!!

If anybody feel the same or could help, I will appreciate your input. I was never told about HDMI 2.2, I was only told about 4K and HDR... Lastly I can add that HDMI Arc is also useless and full of crackling, lip syncing related issues while also being limited
to DVD quality audio. No use for me.

1080p movie on a 4K TV, how does it look like?

I don't have a 4K TV (I'm still at 1080p) yet and I was wondering if someone could answer the following question for me

I just recently upgraded my Monster High movie collection from DVD to Blu-ray, what does the picture quality of a 1080p movie look like when its being displayed on a 4k TV?

The reason that I'm asking this is because playing a DVD then displaying it on a 1080p TV has horrible picture quality. Will a 1080p movie being displayed on a 4k TV look horrible too?

HDMI Passthrough - Picture Quality

I use Humax FreeSat as my provider - via HDMI In on a 4K TV - picture is awesome. No different in quality to what I see using the TV's own FreeSat.

 

Microsoft could have easily avoided the issue by providing an extra HDMI out port for sound only...like many Blu-ray players do. They must have known about these potential issues.

Many receives have an optical audio in port is it not possible to use this to connect your console to your receiver. Some televisions also ARC over HDMI that may also work for you.

I can use optical but then I am limited to lossy audio (DVD quality). Optical can only handle PCM Uncompressed stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 (Lossy) and DTS 5.1(Lossy).

Before upgrading to 4K I always watched my blu-rays in Dolby TrueHD or DTS Master Audio (Lossless) while playing my games in PCM Uncompressed 5.1 via HDMI.

For gaming PCM Uncompressed 5.1 is FAR superior to normal Dolby Digital or DTS. For movies Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio (Lossless) or PCM Uncompressed are also, according to my ears, much much better...HDMI ARC, like the optical cable is also limited
to lossy sound and doesn't have the bandwith to handle PCM Uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 nor lossless audio like Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio.

I have tested all the setups through the years since I am an audio nut. Although being skeptical the first few years I have now (the last few years) come to the conclusion that uncompressed and lossless sound (Blu-ray sound) is vastly superior to lossy audio
(DVD sound) like Dolby Digital (Max 640kps) and DTS (Max 768kps). Blu ray sound, contains about 5 or six times the information, as the bitrates also indicate, for instance lossy DTS (DVD) can reach a maximum of 768kps while DTS Master Audio is usually between
3 - 4mb. Once you get used to the difference in sound quality you cannot go back. Its like the sound opens up and breathes in losless while compressed audio like DD or DTS bitsream are highly compressed and it is very noticable to me.

So HDMI ARC and Optical are 15 year old DVD quality sound. Now I have 4K blu-rays but, since my upgrade to 4K, I am forced to watch these upgraded titles in DVD quality sound. I am not even tallking about DTS X or Dolby Atmos. All I wanted and expected
was to watch my Blu-ray movies in Dolby True HD or DTS Master Audio, like I always did, while playing my games in the much superior PCM Uncompressed via HDMI. Microsoft should have known about these issues, but they first released the Xbox One S without an
extra HDMI and then A SECOND TIME the Xbox One X without an HDMI port for audio only. Many Blu-ray players have this option. This is why I will not buy and Xbox One X. Sound is as important to me as video, if not more important.

Apologies, I made a mistake. DVD Sound is more like 22 years old.

Suppliers out of stock. Going back to 1080p with proper sound and let TV do the upscaling. HDR is not really that remarkable - its more like a gimmick to cover up for the fact that there is virtually no perceivable difference between 1080p and 4k (Not including
games) I have searched for years for an explanation between the difference in quality between the upscaling of a 4K tv vs the X1S or an upscaling 4K Blu-Ray player. There is no answer. I must conclude that 4K upscaling provided by the X1S and aforementioned
upscaling players is a gimmick. There is no factual proof that an X1S enhances the picture by upscaling to 4k. I found it to be sluggish and to restart after playing any HDR game due to slowdown or watching any movies upscaled to 4k. I won't support 4k anymore.
Blu-ray is great - it was a true upgrade over Dvd.

 

Fair enough, I mean your wrong about the whole HDR/4K thing, but that's ok that you feel like this.

Just please do understand that 4K is much better than 1080p, and HDR is much much better than SDR.

Thank you for your answer. I am dramatizing a bit when it comes to the video - I am just frustrated that nobody can help me with my audio problem. I do not want to watch my 4K Blu-rays in Dvd quality sound... and on one has any answers for me. HDR is nice,
its just that LG ruined their "Game Mode" so its looks terrible and is of no use. The only HDR mode that looks tolerable to me is Vivid, but then, regardless of settings, the redness of skintones drives me nuts. I don't like the way HDR looks on my current
setup. Yours might look great, but not mine I can assure you. So maybe its my TV, but I regardless what concerns me more is the audio.
