    Your information is not correct. Actually when you set the xbox one S console resolution to 4K UHD, everything on the console—Home, games, and apps—will display at 4K. 4K content is displayed in its native 4K resolution, and other content (like 1080p content)
    is upscaled to 4K.

    1 and 2. Yes it can play 4K Blu-ray discs and Yes when set to 4K output it will upscale the content. See this snippet from the support page: "When you set your console resolution to 4K UHD, everything on the console—Home, games, and apps—will display at
    4K. 4K content is displayed in its native 4K resolution, and other content (like 1080p content) is upscaled to 4K."

    This has good information, but please note that an orginal Xbox One console will not display content in 4k, even with a 4k capable TV and HDMI. You CAN set your orginial Xbox One to download 4k content, but that will only, in some cases, improve textures and
    things. This article does a good job of explaining the content: Xbox One X: Explaining 4K, HDR, Supersampling and More - Xbox Wire But the orginal Xbox One is just not capable hardware-wise to output 4K content.

    The original Xbox One cannot produce 4k images. Only the Xbox One S can (sampling) and the Xbox One X (true 4k).

    And remember: S and X consoles doesn't need firmware updates to play 4K content.

    How does the xbox one s know to upscale or input game info to 4k, if the games are not the 4k version?

    Xbox One S outputs game content at 1080p and with an HDR color palette, if the game supports it. So no, you are not seeing it in 4K. If you want to see the compatible game in 4K resolution, you would need to use Xbox One X.

    However, Xbox One S will output video content in 4K, such as UltraHD 4K Blu-ray discs and 4K content from streaming services like Netflix.
