4K Blu-ray playback issues on One S and One X

Since all of the old thread seem to have been purged:

I have problems playing certain 4K Blu-ray discs on my XBox One S, the most recent being Ready Player One. Several family members have Ones (X and S) as well and all have a several discs that won't play and the discs that they won't play vary from unit to
unit. For example, my Ready Play One disc will play in one family member's One S, but will not play in my One S or any family member's One X. What specifically happens on the "unplayable" discs is that XBoxes will attempt to load them - you can hear the spindle
RPMs vary and the lens seek - but will fail after several minutes with a "Can't load disc" error.

Interestingly, all of my family's "problem" discs will play in my recently-acquired Panasonic DMP-UB900, which has a heavy aluminum chassis and low-vibration transport. I suspect that the Xbox's transport is allowing the discs to flutter beyond the ability
of the lens' and/or software's ability to manage. And, even though the old "4K playback problems" threads are gone, there are a number of similar threads on Reddit and other social media sites.

So...is this something that software will eventually fix, or is the transport as flimsy as I suspect and we're stuck with hit-and-miss playback?

The Xbox One S 4K Blu-Ray Player Is A Disaster...Good Job!!

There are a number of AV issues with the Xbox One S/X and UHD Blu-ray playback, your guess is as good as mine if they will be fixed.

Certain UHD titles are broken and will not play.

Dolby Atmos is unreliable.

4K AV receiver HDMI handshaking issues.

Image quality issues, the wrong color matrix being used in Blu-ray playback (see review comparison

in link).

They could have broken something on the One S in their rush to fix the broken Blu-ray HDR on the One X with the 10.0.16299.4037 that includes said HDR fix.

 

Add 48p and 16:9 Fullscreen for XBox One S 4K UHD Blu Ray player

In the video settings for XBox One S, support for 48p High Frame Rate from the 4k UHD Blu Ray and 16:9 Fullscreen DVD playback on XBox One S should be added. Also support for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X would be nice as well...

 

You need to enable hdr

And on xbox one s make sure you turn on hdr only for video

And tuen it off when playing non x enchance x games as it does causd issues

Like no sound on gameplay

Keep in mind your cable grade must be hdmi 1.4 and gold plated not silver

 

Please don't try to confuse the OP. What you have said needs correction.

Firstly, playing 4K discs does not require HDR to be enabled. Ultra HD (4K) content, on disc or via a steaming service will display just fine without HDR on a 4K screen - it just won't look as good. Also, HDR can only be enabled fully via the TV or Monitor
settings. HDR needs to be set to 'Auto' On the TV or Monitor to work properly, otherwise none HDR content (as in SDR content) won't look right.

Also, the standard for playing 4K UHD discs is HDMI 2.0. This technology exists in the Xbox One S and X itself, not in the HDMI cable. Any HDMI cable made in the last 10 years should support 4K and HDR. HDMI cables DO NOT need to be Gold plated to support
4K either. The HDMI that comes with the One S and the One X isn't gold plated.

Now with that out of the way, down to the issue:

least it is here on the Xbox forums.

It is possible to get discs to play, but to do so requires restarting the machine (with the disc still inside) and attempting to launch the movie via the Blu-ray App as usual. And if that fails, removing and re-inserting the disc. I had issues playing
Star Wars - The Last Jedi. It took a couple of restarts and re-inserts to get the disc to play.

I'm probably going to get a dedicated player myself soon.

Thanks for the feedback. I've noted exactly the same "restart then plays" behavior and I could tolerate that to an extent, but the fact that my One S won't play certain discs that my children's will, and vice-versa, is maddening. At least I'm not alone.

You mentioned other threads about this, but I couldn't find the earlier threads complaining about this, even the one that I bookmarked.

 

They were on the old Xbox forums. I would have thought these were migrated across, strange.

I definitely saw them on there. One of them was mine.
