4K Blu-Ray discs. Does the Xbox One support playing these?

I read on various different sites yesterday that the Xbox One will play 4K Blu-Ray discs. The weather was crappy so I went out and bought Deadpool 4K Blu-Ray and The Revanent 4K Blu-Ray (sorry I'm stressing the 4K blu-ray MS support didn't seem to think
there was a difference when I was on chat lol). When I popped the discs in it took a while but I got an error saying the discs were unreadable.

I don't have the exact error because I half way expected to find others with the same issue on the interwebs but haven't.

My question is this: Does the Xbox One support playing 4K blu-Ray discs and if my console is not able to read the discs, is it faulty and need repair or does xbox one not ACTUALLY play 4K blu-rays?

I understand that it would downscale the 4K playback regardless I just want to know if the format is supported by xbox one or not. The person on the chat couldn't seem to definitively answer the question.

I have checked on my end the console can only support the 4k disc if the disc is set to multi-format which means the disc has to be supported by normal Blu-ray and has the option to display 4k as well.

From a gaming point of view this console does not support 4K (And it is not advertised to support it) but it does support HDR gaming. The 4K support the console offers if for playing UHD blu ray discs and via streaming apps such as Netflix.

The Xbox One does have HDMI 2.0 which means it is capable of outputting a 4K signal, but most if not all of the Apps on Xbox One do not support 4K for the moment (this is why you can't play your discs)

If you are interested in true 4K content look make sure that the TV you are getting is a Smart TV (You want to get a TV that has HDMI 2.0 HDCI 2.2 and HDR) and has the apps you care about (Netflix, Amazon, etc). This is the easiest way to get 4K right now.

To add to what M3tal Daz3 stated, the Xbox One does not currently support 4k, and right not there have been no announcements with a time line to support it. They've stated that there is 4k in the works, but they haven't detailed if that's via firmware updates,
or another console entirely. Right now the highest bluray you'll be able to play in the Xbox is 1080p.
