360 HDD crashed during update. Won't boot with flash drive or new HDD.

After a period of inactivity, I decided to boot up the console to play some games over the holidays and as it started up, it required system updates to be run, as you'd expect.

During these updates, after a few reboots and installations of updates, the system ground to a halt, and then rebooted with
1 flashing red light and error E68, indicating an error with the hard drive.

I followed the online steps of removing the hard drive and rebooting to see if the flashing red light persisted while the HDD was uninstalled, but it didn't.It tries to restart the update and since it can't find a HDD, it halts, asking to reseat the HDD
and that the system will reboot after that.

When reseating the HDD, it immediately goes back to Error E68 and flashing red light.

Since everything indicated the issue being with the HDD, I got a new HDD and installed, and then tried booting the system again. The console starts up without any flashing lights or system error codes, but it starts trying to run the update again. Since
the new HDD doesn't have the update files downloaded, the console then gives the message that it can't read the updates from the HDD and to reseat the HDD.

Is there any way to get the system to stop trying to run the updates when booting it up, so that I can get into the User console and run a factory reset to get the XBox up and running again?

:)

Can't Get New Live Update to Download please help!!!
Ok so I have a 250 gb hd slim and it has worked fine up until I haven't played on it in a couple weeks.
Is this two weeks, or you haven't used it since late November? The last system update was November 27, 2012. If you've
logged into Live since then, you have the update already.
What error?
To put the update on a USB flash drive, the flash drive
must be partitioned/formatted as FAT32. The update directory goes on the root of the flash drive. After that, you just plug it into the 360. As long as the flash drive is readable by the 360, it will automatically pick up the update.
Do not do this, or if you do don't use the full amount of space for the 360. A 360 USB Memory Unit cannot be used to store the update. There has to be free space unallocated to a USB Memory
Unit to store the update.
It sounds a lot like the console's 250GB HDD has failed. When a console detects no storage device and is booted, it may claim that an update
is required (mine did tonight). Cancel the update process.

Try removing the HDD entirely, then plug the USB flash drive into the console and perform a Custom USB Memory Unit install. Whatever the maximum size is that the 360 tries to make the USB Memory Unit, decrease it by 0.5GB. Once that's one, plug the drive
into your PC and copy the update to the root of the flash drive. Finally, boot the console with just the USB Memory Unit attached, no HDD.

If you already had the update, nothing should happen. It should boot up to a Sign In screen. If your console still needs the update, it'll update, reboot, and come back to a Sign In screen.

before it errors on me.

I downloaded the update to a flash drive and it won't even read my flash drive.

I have tried to
customize or format it to the 360 on many different occasions

My 360 won't even read the damn(pardon my language) flash drive nor hard drive.

Only 780GB of 1TB Available - Brand New System

That is offical statment. The OS is in the hard drive and save space for updates. You never used the whole HDD on other computing devices ever. Because it store on the hard drive and not on a chip. When it save on a chip. There be no space for update and
new featuer to the system. Trun on a NES without a game. And see what you get. What is nothing. And be that way when last one get fried. But XBOX 360 the OS is found on a flash drive. But take space from the HDD for updates. XBOX ONE it on HDD and not a flash
drive. That why you get 25% less. Go the 360 system opion and go to memory. And select HDD. And go to system updates. It will give you idea how XBOX ONE.

Dig up a USB flash drive. Configure it for use with the console. Unplug the HDD. See if it still crashes.

You could just have a faulty HDD. It happens.
