3.5mm earphones only usable as a microphone

I have a pair of 3.5mm earphones (They came with my Alcatel phone, if that matters) that I could use on my XBOX One controller without difficulty (Game, chat audio and microphone). These worked great until today (Friday 29th 2016) the audio stopped working.
The part I find unusual is that my earphones can still function as microphones which is not something they were designed to do, I believe. I think it might be a problem with my controller because audio works perfectly on my PC, phone and tablet. Is there a
way I can fix this error without a new controller and/or new earphones?

Does Xbox One support standard 3.5mm headset

I use standard 3.5mm headset. It's the type of headset you use with phones with a 3.5mm jack. No microphone so no voice chat. It's just for the sound. The same jack as little earphones for cellphones. Is it possible to plug these in ?

 

Mic Issues

I recently bought a headset but it turns out it has no microphone. So I was looking for alternatives.

I currently own a 3.5mm earphone which has a mic on it. If I were to buy a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor and plug it into my controller and then into the earphones, would the mic work?

All replys are welcomed and any help will be much appreciated.

1) I recently found out that earphones CAN be used as microphones and it wasn't some ruse or something.

2) I shone a light down the 3.5mm port and could clearly see a gold/brass material, probably to connect my earphones to the device. I could barely see another but I couldn't see any others. Is this where the problem is?

Sorry to hear about the issue. Are you able to try your headset on a different Xbox One controller? Alternatively, are you able to try a different headset on your current controller? Also, if you haven't yet, I recommend updating your controller. To do this,
from your Xbox One console dashboard:

• Open the Guide menu
• Scroll down to 'Settings'
• Select 'All Settings'
• Scroll down to 'Kinect & Devices'
• Select 'Devices & Accessories'
• Select 'Xbox One Wireless Controller'
• Check to see if an update is available

Give all that a try and let us know if it works!

 

Thanks for the tips above. I plugged in another set of earphones and all suddenly worked perfectly. Can't believe I didn't try it but thanks!
