    2017 Spring Downgrade

Once again Microsoft has taken something that works well, and made it less functional. What was once a one step process, is now a three step process. I am of course speaking of the new function of the home button.

The appreciation I had for the original function (hit once for home) was its simplicity. This was sadly short lived for the expected lifetime of xbox one, and traded out for a clunky interface that really only introduces an additional menu between what your
doing & the desired page. This seems to be a recurring issue with the company, and cannot help but callout to the Windows 8 failure of 2014.

Backwards engineering such as this should make Microsoft thankful Apple only makes computers & phones. Otherwise I may be compelled switch to team Apple, for a third time.

    Two Thumbs Down.

    :)

  2. Spring 2017 Update

I'm sure there are a few cool things with the new dashboard update but I personally don't like it. It would be nice if I could reassign my home button to take me back to the home page. I can reassign all the other buttons. Why not the home button? Now
I have to press the home button, scroll to home & press A. This is supposed to be faster? Stupid!

It does seem slower and more cumbersome, but you get used to it after a while.

  5. I'm still in disbelief that they did this to the UI. I haven't turned my xbox on since the update. I've bought so many damn games, I hate the idea of selling them on kijiji for a loss, but I really don't want this system in my house anymore. It's such a
disappointing piece of hardware, I can't bare to look at it. Would it be so hard for them to allow users to fully customize the UI themselves and decide which options they want? Apparently so. I'm done dropping dollars on the xbox.

I don't know that I would go that far as to sell everything and stop using it. At the end of the day it's still quite easy to play games. That's all I use it for.

One hundred percent this! Judging by the amount of negative feedback in the last week - admittedly just a drop in the ocean when we isolate those complaints from the MILLIONS of satisfied users, aka the majority - you'd think the whingers existed in some
alternative gaming universe. Everyday I log on, a breeze because I'm automatically signed in on this console, and all my favorite tabs are waiting. I hit Microsoft Edge and it's a one-step process to begin browsing. If I want to reply here, it's another button
press because I'm auto-signed in as well. When I'm done browsing I hit the Home button *once* to quit and then tap the next tab (my current game) and the process is seamless - frictionless!

If people are complaining about having to punch buttons more than once or twice, they've got an attitude problem.

The thing is that you shouldn't have to get used to a menu system, it should be intuitive enough that you get it the first time. I could understand people making a mistake if they are first time UI designers but this is Microsoft, the biggest software company
    in the world.

It's not an attitude problem, it's simple design. There is a term 'perceived friction' in design and it means making people take extra steps to achieve the same goal that they could do far more easily before. It is something that should be avoided at all costs.

On its own this may seem like a small thing but if a customer is already feeling disillusioned with the product, say the lack of games exclusive to that console, then it could very well be the thing that breaks the camel's back and sends them to a competing
    platform.

You're now stating there's "perceived friction" whereas I've just posted that the new UI is "frictionless" - at least to me. It's one or the other, but again, let me repeat I've not noticed *any* degradation or disruption to my daily gaming ritual since
the Spring update. Home button takes you to the 'home' page by default. Apart from a few things being shifted around which now appear in a little window to the left, it's perfectly painless and EASY TO USE.

If people are complaining about design issues, they've got a visual acuity problem.

  10. Agreed. I have never been on the forum before, but came on to complain about the new home button. I hate it. Why fix it if it isn't broken? I design websites. Simple, one-step processes are what people want. Not overly complex ridiculous processes. First,
click home button. Then, don't go home, but see weird menu. Then scroll to find home. Then click home. Then go home. Absolutely terrible. It's like the console design/programming team has never used a console in their lives. Simple, one-button solutions,
    people. It's not that hard.

Wait, you've "agreed" right after I just posted, "disagreeing" with everybody else? Way to preface an argument brah.

Okay, let's keep this simple. I'm using Microsoft Edge, I'm gonna hit the Home button. It returns that weird menu you just spoke about (am guessing the left-hand indent is our new home now). From there it's a ONE-STEP process to continue to my next destination.
I have Mass Effect Andromeda loaded. If I wanted to play that straight up, it would take me there. That's two steps, give or take a nudge on the d-pad, in total. If I wanted to "go home" (as you said), it would still take two steps. There's *no* scrolling
to find home because it's the first tab on the list!

How is it absolutely terrible that people can't follow a predetermined path?

  12. You are now having to take two steps to achieve that which could be done with a single one before. That is the perceived friction, doing more to achieve the same goal.

That's not saying the new design isn't easy to use of course, rather it is still an extra step that is unneeded in the eyes of many. For example why do you think people get annoyed at "are you sure screens".

Why not make this new two step process an optional one? The first time you press the home button it gives you the choice of the two step process, with that extra functionality, or returning to the simpler design and one press to return home. Add in a toggle
in the settings menus and you offer people a choice of what they want.

Ill tell you why the update had to happen, because of moaning winging, whining people that complained about Kinnect. They shouted from the rooftops "I DONT WANT KINNECT!!!" "I DONT NEED KINNECT!!" so Microsoft kindly removed the need for it, but ooohhh
there is a sting in the tail, because people quickly found that they could no longer capture video anymore, so Microsoft added the ability to do that (but with added button presses)

Everything was fine for a while until Microsoft then added the ability to take screenshots, now us Kinnect users where fine, we just had an added voice command, but the none Kinnect owners where now really annoyed, saying it was too jard and too long and
too complicated to take both video captures and screenshots.

So Microsoft changed the whole dashboard, removed the snap feature and changed how the Home button worked.

Seriously if you don't like it get rid of the Xbox, you owe Microsoft no loyalty at all. If you want a PS4 or even a Switch get one, use your Xbox One as a trade in, Microsoft wont care, they have your money already.
