Basic question from a Dad trying to create peace between two sons always vying for xbox time. If I buy a 2nd console, can they each be on a console (simultaneously) in their individual profile playing live gold games without me having to pay for a 2nd xbox
live gold subscription?

Assuming the answer is yes, am I correct in assuming that progress in a game is only stored on the specific console used to play the game?

No, you will need two Gold subscriptions. The sharing feature is for one console sharing the gold to other profiles on the console.

Yes, the account with gold needs to be set on a console as principal and play with that account on the other console

As others have mentioned, the home sharing will help with digital games/xbox live gold. Game progress will be stored in the cloud, so they can keep their game progress regardless of which console they play on.

With game sharing they can also be playing the same game at the same time.
