2 xbox consoles same house sharing xbox live

I have our Xbox One S setup as the home xbox and one the whole family uses. My parent account has the Xbox Live Gold attached to it. My son bought his own Xbox Series X console. I signed into the Series X so my oldest son could play GTA, Fortnite, etc.

The issue is if I want to play with him or even play another game while he is using his Xbox, it won't let me.

Did I not set this up correctly, or am I forced to have 2 Xbox Live subscriptions if I want to play with my son?

I think extended is wrong.

The true and first meaning of the account/game sharing was to a house share like 2 brothers with 2 consoles and for the parents doesnt need to buy 2 xbox live golds or 2 games. And not to people share with all their friends.

Doesnt mix the family settings with account sharing on Xbox, is not the same thing and not the same end.

You could either buy Gold on 2 accounts or buy it on your son's account. You can only share on 1 console at a time. You would have to set your son's console as your Home in order to share your Gold with him so you can sign into the other console and play.
However, that would make it so anyone else in your family is no longer able to access your Gold.

Or if buy Gold on your son's account, he can set the One S as his Home in order to keep sharing on that console and he can sign in on his console and still use Gold.

You can use one subscription on both console inside the same house, set as Xbox home of the profile that own the subscription, the console used by the other user, and use the other console online with the profile that have the subscription active.

Just to clarify... The Home Xbox option is for share your games in a console for your house.

For example if you have 2 consoles in your house one in your living room and other in a your game room, so everyone can play your games on the console of your living room and you can still play on your console in your room.

Not for share your account to a different person that lives in another house, City, etc.

Remember share accounts go against the Xbox Live Terms and conditions.

You can only set once console as your Home at a time. So if you have the gold on your account, you would need to set the 2nd One as your Home so your wife can share your gold. You would then be able to sign into the One in the living room and continue using
the One as it's tied to your account.

If the gold is on your wife's account, then you would do the opposite and set the living room console as her Home.
