2 Red Lights... but in quadrants 1 & 4, or 2 & 3. Don't think it's the ...

Last night our Xbox 360 started displaying 2 flashing red lights. It was very odd because the console had been off and no one was playing a game, but suddenly it turned itself on and the 2 lights started flashing. We tried to shut it off but it wouldn't
power down. I connected a controller to see if everything still appeared to work, and it did... no error messages, no weird behavior. A quick Google search suggested that the 2 red lights were indicative of an "Overheating" error, so we unplugged the console
and set it aside overnight.

Today I plugged the console back in. IMMEDIATELY upon connecting the power cable, the console turned itself on and flashed 2 red lights again. It seems HIGHLY unlikely to me that we have an overheating issue when the console had sat, unplugged and disconnected,
for about 16 hours yet the red lights activated the second the power cord was reattached.

After more internet searching, it seems like the overheating issue is associated specifically with the lights in quadrants 1 and 3 being red (top left and lower left). This is not the case with our console. The lights that flash red have been in quadrants
2 and 3 (top right and lower left) or quadrants 1 and 4 (top left and lower right). I have been unable to find any information about what this might mean. The console still appears to work and we still haven't seen any error messages. However, the ONLY way
to get the console to power down and stay powered down is to disconnect the power cord. If I turn it off, it turns itself back on within 5 seconds (usually almost immediately). Also, I tried the process for determining the secondary error code by holding the
sync button and pressing the eject button. This did nothing - no flashing pattern, no other information... all it did was make the disc tray pop open. Therefore, I have no 4-digit secondary code to give as additional information.

2 red rings only with GTA V

When you see the 2 flashing red lights, hold the sync button on the console and press the eject button. This will give you some rapidly flashing red lights. Make note of how many quadrants are doing this. Repeat this 3 more times to obtain a 4 digit sequence.

Four rapidly flashing quadrants = a numerical 0

Three rapidly flashing quadrants = a numerical 3

Two rapidly flashing quadrants = a numerical 2

One rapidly flashing quadrant = a numerical 1

With the 2 flashing red lights, you will most likely get 0011 (CPU), 0012 (GPU), or 0013 (RAM).

 

RROD; What Are My Options?

It all depends, on what error code has come up, when the RROD occurred & what lights on the ring, light up... It could be easily fixable..

1. Bottom Right Light [4th Player Light Red] = Hardware Failure.. (E74 etc)

2. Top & Bottom Left Lights [1st & 3rd Lights Red] = Overheating Issue..

(Should stop flashing, after it cools down.. Turn off immediately)

3. Top Left & Bottom Left & Right Lights [1st, 3rd & 4th Lights Red] = General Hardware Failure..


(no Error code, will be displayed & it should work after restart)

4. All Four Lights Red = AV Cable Error.. (Change AV Cable)

About the HDD... You can't use the old Pro/Elite HDD in the new 360 Slims etc

 

Two lights, regardless of where they are, do mean the console is overheating. You should definitely look into either getting a new one or having your current one repaired.

Yeah, I've seen the page on two flashing lights. Every document or page that I've seen mentioning it, though, said it's the two lights on the left that flash. I thought, perhaps, since our lights were in a different pattern that it meant something else.

I'm not sure how it can be overheating when it's been completely disconnected for over 24 hours (I've now had it disconnected from everything for about 36 hours). The second the power supply gets reattached, though, the lights come on (even before I hit
the power button).

Our 360 is one of the 2009 "Elite" models, btw.

 

It's very possible that there's something wrong with the components inside that cause a faster than normal overheat when the console is turned on.
