2 children's xboxes using 1 parent live membership

I've had a Microsoft account where I'm the parent to my 2 11yo boys for ages in the hope I can buys tuff and my boys get access too.

My boys currently play Fortnite on Nintendo Switch, but they want to play it on an xbox. So, I've just bought 2 xbox one s for each of my children. I turned them on and registered the xboxes using my boys Microsoft accounts.

I then discovered even though Fortnite is free, I have to buy a live membership to play it!

On 1 of the consoles I have logged in using my parent Microsoft account and bought xbox live membership. I hoped that my boys would then get that membership, but they don't.

What do I need to do to get both boys using my xbox live memberahip and how do I share the games that came with 1 of the consoles (via a digital code) with the other console?

Yes. Then you can have one boy set a console as their Home so the other one can access the game/Gold that way. The one who purchased it all can still access everything on the non-Home console as long as they are signed into Live.

You would have to set 1 of the consoles as your Home console in order to share your Gold/games with their accounts. https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/hardware-network/console/my-home-xbox

However, you can only set 1 console as your Home at a time, so they would either need to both use that console, or you would want to put future purchases on one of their accounts so they can share the gold/games on both consoles.

Each boy was registered on their own xbox at the moment, so if I just swap the xboxes over and get each boy to add them self's as a user then any purchases will follow their gamer tag and also the home xbox. Then going to a friend's house and using their
xbox should see their purchased content. Only the boy who bought the gold/games will work at a friend's house though. In that situation they will use their switches to play Fortnite.

Could I make 1 xbox my own home xbox and add another user to that xbox, so he gets the gold/games, but how does the other one get it? Or would it be better to buy gold/games for 1 of my boys then the other boy to access those purchases?

To add to what has already been said (assuming that the parent has the Xbox Live account) set the Xbox that the children will be using as the Xbox Live Account holders (parents) "My Home Xbox" then the parent account can sign out and the children can use
the Live and any games (deemed suitable) that are on the parent account. You as the account holder can then sign in on the other Xbox and use that to play your games and use Live
