1. 16x9 to 4x3 and LCD vs CRT issues

I was theorizing that if there is nothing inheritly laggy about the HDMI signal, and all the delay is in the picture drawing technology, then converting from HDMI ti VGA and plugging the VGA into a 4x3 VGA CRT monitor eould gove a lag free ecperience

    2 big questions.

    1. I know conversions take time. Usually for anything except light gun games, 1 millisecond or less is unnoticeable (maybe more is, but I know I don't feel a Hauppauge Rocket and it is 1 ms maximum Yet even a 1 microsecond Betamax is enough to throw a
gun's aim off.). Is the delay worse than a millisecond? Is so, then you save 9 milliseconds delay vs the best, new premium TN display, which inputdelay.con lists at 9 ms.

    2. How does an Xbox One, a typical HDMI to VGA concerter and a typical PC monitor from the 00s handle the 16x9 to 4x3 conversion? I can think of 3 ways, which I'll list from love to hate:

    A letterboxing

    B. Horizontally squishong the picture. ( i heard there is a way to vertically compress so you get proper proportion pixture wuth my nanual letterbox)

C: Zoom and chop. 16x9 to 4x3 and LCD vs CRT issues :(

    :)

1.) The delay comes from the HDMI to VGA converter, as they need to take a full digital frame information, and "serialize" it to an analogue signal that is "drawn" line by line. So check the technical specifications for the HDMI to VGA converter.

2.) Neither the Xbox nor a VGA monitor from the 00's will do 4:3 conversion. Depending on how the HDMI to VGA converter handles the conversion to analogue, you might get a 16:9 picture squished to fullscreen (i.e. long slim faces). Or, if the HDMI converter
advertises to the Xbox a certain screen aspect ratio, the Xbox could letterbox the 16:9 picture.

The Xbox gets the information about screen resolution and aspect ratio via HDMI from the display (in this case the converter). I don't know if the converter detects the CRT's capabilities via VGA and passes them along via HDMI. And if so, if HDMI can work
with the resolution and refresh rate information from the CRT.

Basically: Contact the maker of the HDMI to VGA converter and ask them how they handle it all.

    Hi,

You mentioned in your post a 'Hauppauge Rocket', this is a capture device not a converter Capture devices will
    always have latency issues.

You need to buy a real HDMI to VGA adaptor.

Why is there no display aspect ratio controls?

    I'm not talkin about 4 by 3 media on a 16 by 9 display. I'm talking about a 4 by 3 display showing media that is 16x9.

If I were to watch 4 by 3 media on a 4 by 3 TV that has been set in 16 by 9 mode it would look like I'm looking through the wrong end of a telescope .

And I don't exactly have a cinema size CRT TV the CRT TV is around 15 in so therefore you're making it really small if the Xbox One is unaware of the TV size it's been connected to.

Maybe the setting should say TV size is a automatic 4x3, 16x9, enter your own ratio, in the form of either a decimal or a fraction with whole numbers on the numerator and denominator.

I guess my Xbox One cannot sense my VGA CRT.

HDMI vs VGA Difference In Input Lag???
Im heading towards HDMI for my new monitor because of picture quality , but what i want to know is which produces more input lag VGA or HDMI or do they produce the same.??
The LCD's response time is going to be a bigger
factor than any potential "lag" caused by the conversion of an analog signal back into digital.

Make sure your 360's output matches your monitor's native resolution. Anything else and the monitor's scaler may kick in. Scalers introduce latency.
It's said that there's a very very slight delay when using HDMI vs VGA as VGA is
    "instant" in a sense.
Where have you read that?

A CRT connected via VGA is faster than an LCD by virtue of how a CRT works vs how an LCD works. The CRT/VGA vs LCD/DVI comparison was one of the more popular ways to determine an LCD's latency.

When connecting to an LCD over HDMI or VGA, though, there should be virtually no difference. Any difference there may be would be in HDMI's favor as it doesn't have to be converted back into a digital format on the LCD end.
