10 year old gamertag suddenly changed on its own?

We understand that you wanted to keep using the same gamertag and was surprised to find out that you are currently using different one. Let us check on this together so you will get back to gaming.

There are two things that could happen in here:

• You might have use different credentials (email account or phone number) in signing into Xbox or
  
• If you have not sign into your Xbox account, your account has expired. In newly updated Microsoft Services Agreement, there is an Xbox Gamertag expiration. Which requires every Xbox user to Xbox Services at least once in a five-year period, otherwise you may lose access to the gamertag associated with your account and that gamertag may become available for use by others.

Its the same email address I have been using for nearly 10 years and suddenly when I log in the gamertag has changed. Have emails from xbox to that email address from years ago with links to my original gamertag

even if it has zero gamerscore it could still be someones account that they are not using for gaming, as long as its signed into every so often then it will always be owned.

I have another gamertag that is zero but is over 10 years old as its tied to a microsoft account i use regular too.

Thanks for the support message.

If your friends list is gone, messages, and the gamertag is different, you are more then likely signed into the wrong Microsoft account. Please double check the account details and ensure you're signed into the correct account. IF you are signed into the
correct account and you received a forced name change, you will need to go to
http://enforcement.xbox.com/ to file a case review if you would like to dispute it.
