I clicked on the link in the dashboard that gave me the offer for a $1 for just one month of xbox live, but going through the checkout it said near the end they would charge me $9.99 starting today instead of just $1.

Both require you to have a credit card attached to your account.

There are also a couple of dashboard deals that you can try out (they show up on your XBOX 360 Dashboard from time to time) $1 for 1 month or $2 for 2 months.

Hey there,

Sorry to hear about the issue. Is there any way you can pass us a screenshot of the offer on your Xbox dashboard, the offer details page with the terms, and a picture of the check out screen when you select that offer? That way we can see a step by step
of what you see when you attempt to take the offer. You can upload those images here directly.

Additionally, would you happen to be in the Xbox Insider program? If so, let us know and be sure to report it while you're on that offer details page so that data can be passed to that proper team.

We see that you are not receiving Gold Status this month due to your subscription being a promotional Gold subscription for 1 month. Promotional subscriptions are not eligible for Rewards, so your free 1 month is not eligible. From our FAQ:
