1 TB Xbox One in the future?

No real need for it with external HDD's. Maybe release it with a special edition in the future or with a revised slim version.

Given that you only have 324 GB of actual usable storage space, what is the average size of an Xbox One game when it is installed into the HDD. I know that it varies per game, so I'm looking for a safe estimate of sorts

There isn't an "average".
An estimate won't help. Some games are 50GB, some are 40GB, some are 36, some are 16, some are less than 1GB.

Using, say, 20GB as an "average" doesn't help when the game you want to buy requires 50GB and your storage device is down to 40GB free.

A 50 GB installation, wow that is a lot of space to consume for a game to take without any DLC yet. I certainly hope that the games install quickly for instances when you want to play a deleted game (to make room for another game).

E3 is little over a week away, see what happens then. If they do drop in the potential or hint at a larger HDD then you may be best to wait but otherwise I'd suggest just taking the plunge. External storage is now here and you have USB ports on the back
and side so it's not at all hard to keep it out of sight. Obviously I see your concern on the extra price on top of the console but a larger console would probably cost more than the price of a 1 or even 2TB drive anyway.

I agree Dynamic. Look at the price comparisons between a new 4GB and 250GB Xbox 360 console from an authorized retailer, and how much cheaper it costs just to get the 4gb version and a storage drive like 250gb or something. Even though HDD is more affordable
than Solid State Hard Drives. It would probably slow the performance of a larger memory console too since HDD's (5400rpm) don't have very fast read speeds even though Xbox 1 has a good processor (AMD 8 core Jaguar APU). Also got external HDD support. It's
Tuesday afternoon for me. The 500GB even tho it's not removable which is unfortunate, is satisfactory. Who knows, if you get a 3.0 USB external HDD, it could even be a better HDD than the one M includes with the Xbox 1 console.

Is Microsoft going to issue some kind of list of recommended External HDDs that perform well with the Xbox One or is it going to be a guessing game of "did I buy the right HDD"?

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if there came a time where HDDs have a small sticker or altering on the packaging showing that they are "Xbox Approved" if you like. I'm pretty sure this happened with some SanDisk USB Flash Drives when the support arrived
on 360.

However, you shouldn't necessarily base your purchase on this, it may even cause a marginal price rise. All you need to look for is a trusted brand, Seagate and Western Digital are 2 of the best manufacturers out there and many tech-savvy people will agree.
A faster read speed may be beneficial for loading times but I'm pretty sure the pre-installed drive is 5400rpm so anything above that is nothing more than a bonus.

Lei Fang, yes, 3.0 USB External HDDs are already available.

 

USB 3.0 HDDs are all over the market and surprisingly not too expensive. I paid £55 for a 2TB powered USB 3.0 Seagate drive. Double check before you buy anything but 80% of the quality drives on the market are USB 3.0 but will also work with a USB 2.0 port
if you ever need.
