0x80bd003c - Format HDD to NTFS to use for Xbox game captures

Ive been trying to set up a USB 3 HDD to store game captures on my Xbox one and keep getting the error message:

“First format this drive on your PC.

To capture game clips and screen shots externally, storage must be formatted to NTFS. Connect it to your PC and format it, then reconnect it to your Xbox. (0x80bd003c)”

I have two different external drives, two different computers and a Xbox One X and an Xbox One and no matter how i reformat the drives, on which computer and no matter which box i plug it into i get the same error message.

Has anyone got a solution for this issue?

    Thanks in Advance

    :)

Xbox One X External Hard Drive Format

If you want to use it for games and apps, it has to be formatted for use by the Xbox.

If you want to use the drive to store music or video files, including game capture, you must format it NTFS.

All of the MS docs say this only, so I would advise against exFAT.

I am using two external drives on mine, one for games (formatted by the Xbox), one for game capture (formatted on my PC for NTFS).

    Hope this helps

how to use external hard drive on my xbox one x..

    Hello guys,

I want to record my gameplay up to 1 hour. In order to do that I have to formate my drive to NTFS. I did that only my iMac. now I am trying to set the drive as the capture location. it doesn't work and I get the error code:0x80bd003c. I am already using
a external hard drive for my games and I want to use a 2nd one fore capturing videos.

Maybe I did something wrong while formatting on my iMac?

can somebody help me please? or maybe somebody had the same situation.

    thanks.

To add to this very good potential solution, you may want to uncheck the "Quick Format" option. This will take a bit longer than normal, but it will be more thorough.

I have reformatted the drives to NTFS multiple times using the quick format and standard format options and had no joy.

Ive been trying to get this to work for over a week now and the drives have been formated probably 10 times each in that period of time using the standard format and dozens more as quick format.

I don’t really want to buy a new HDD as if these two don’t work why would another one.....

Had a feeling you probably had. Is this occurring on both Xbox One consoles, and have you tried each of the USB ports on each one?

0x80bd003c - Format HDD to NTFS to use for Xbox game captures

Sorry to here that. When connecting a HDD to the Xbox One, it should detect a new drive being put into it and display a pop up message saying something along the lines of, "Set Up External Storage". Below that there should be an interactive button saying
    Format Storage Device.

Does this pop up for you, and/or have you gone through this method?

This only formats the HDD for usage for games and you cant use it for captures so I can’t use it for the purpose i intend to.

Saying that one of the drives was previously formatted this way and when I couldn’t get the newer drive to work i reformatted the old drive back to NTFS and that didnt work either.

Currently both drives are in the process of being reformatted yet again.

Is your HDD USB 3.0 or 2.0?

Both USB 3, one is 1TB and the other is 2TB. They both meet the criteria for the intended useage.

After formatting them, if you go back into the format settings, do they still say NTFS?

They do. I can transfer files to them and the xbox will read and display the media content but it will not allow me to use the drive for video captures.

Have you gone to the following directory (while your drive is plugged into your Xbox):

    -Press the Xbox button

-then select System > Settings > Preferences >
    Broadcast & capture.

-Select Capture location, then choose a destination for your game clips and screenshots
