    Xbox one x hard drive failure. Insiders updates installed.


    My nephew has asked me to replace his hard drive on his one x. His console had a later update firmware than the currently available public one so I can't just install the latest public osu

    Is there anything that can be done or do we just have to wait until a higher public release. He's bugging me because he has no console at the moment!

    Your console asked for an update because the hard drive failed and it could not read the previous install of the update. It's not the update that causes the failure but rather the failure causes the need for an update.

    The OSU files are all up to date for the Xbox one X. What they are meaning for hardware failure is the hard drive. If the system files are not installing correctly, then you will need a repair for the hard drive. To set one up on your own you can go to

    Well, either

    a) there's a storage device problem; try turning the Xbox off and removing the hard drive, then plug the hard drive back in and power up.

    b) an update failure, in which case you go to
    http://www.xbox.com/update     and do the USB Manual Install procedure.

    Try this before a repair:

    Go to System Settings - Memory - Highlight the hard drive

    When the hard drive is highlighted press the button combination "LB, RB, X, LB, RB, X".

    This will remove the current install, the Xbox's automatic response will be to re-download the updates. One the current install is removed, the console will restart and begin the re-downloads.

    I understand your frustration here, but let me try to explain.

    Your Xbox One console in many ways is like a PC. Its Operating System is installed on to the hard drive. When updates fail to install to the Xbox One, the usual failure is with the hard drive and a corrupted/damaged Operating system.

    Since the Xbox One hard drive is not user replaceable and the Xbox One OS being far more complex than the Operating System of the Xbox 360, the only recourse is to contact Microsoft for a repair.

    This wouldn't be considered a 'not fit for purpose' fault under British consumer law and it's not a 'sabotage' attempt on behalf of Microsoft.
