Xbox Pre-order Payment Failed but Game is Pre-Downloading – What Should I Do?

Per the FAQ - "All pre-orders typically charge customers 10 days before the game release date. This means that you'll need to have a valid payment option on your account at least 10 days before a game release to avoid any billing issues. After a charge on your account has failed for a pre-order, there will be another attempt at a charge a few days later. If that second attempt fails to successfully charge, your pre-order will be canceled, and you'll need to repurchase the desired game again after you have added a valid payment option to your account."

So, no, you cannot pause/delay the payment. If the payment fails after 2 attempts the pre-order is cancelled and you would need to do the purchase again.

Typically pre-orders are taken around 10 days before game release. I would check to see what your billing says at https://account.microsoft.com

I didn't actually know that before, never pre-ordered something. But what it says is that the authorization failed for the payment.

Please double-check the status of the pre-order first from your account's order history on this link, https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders.

If it only says decline status there, the system will still try to charge the payment method used for the pre-order in the upcoming days.

If it says failed status there, you should be able to pre-order the game again and see if it works. A failed status means that the system has tried to charge your payment method multiple times already.

Thanks for the update on the issue. We recommend first to check your
purchase history make sure the payment went through. Reason for this is if pre-order with credit/debit card it didn't take the amount when you pre-ordered. It takes the payment within 10 days of release. If it did take the payment and shows purchased, the
game should auto install if auto update is on. Personally pre-ordered the game myself and mine auto installed last night. You can try to uninstall the pre-order then go back to the store and download the pre-order you got first.

Hi. My name is Mel and I am an independent advisor. When you Pre-order a game they issue a pre payment authorisation hold on your card. They do not take the money for pre orders straight away. They are usually charged 5-7 days before release so if funds were not available at this point the purchase would then fail. Hope this helps.
