Xbox gamertag is taken even though it is not

    Xbox gamertag is taken even though it is not


    So I am trying to change username on my main account but there are some issues .

    Here are the steps I went through :

    1. I am on my alt account testing different usernames , I typed in the one I like WITHOUT changing it , it says username is NOT taken and is viable to use

    2. After seeing the username is not taken , I decided to log in my main account and type back that same username , but it says its taken even though it is not (confirmed by my alt account)

    I am very confused , I typed the username on my alt account simply to test if its taken or not , I didnt change it yet and it shows username is avaliable to use , but for some reason the main account says its taken .

    I understand that there is a cool down period , where if you test a username , it cant be taken for a while , but it has been literally 2 months and it still says its taken , so what do i do to solve this issue ?

    "Gamertag taken" even though it's not?

    If the system says it's taken, then it's in use somewhere on Microsoft's services. The system doesn't see things like spaces as making a gamertag unique. So looking up "gamertag" may not show up even though it's in use as "gamer tag". The tag system is in
    use on other Microsoft services as well, so even if it's not in use on an Xbox, it may be in use somewhere else.

    If the system says a tag is taken, then it's taken and you cannot use it. The tag system is in use in other Microsoft services, so even if it's not on use on the Xbox it can be in use elsewhere. The system also doesn't see things like spaces as making a
    gamertag unique. Even though the gamertag is not taken as sir flexalot, it is in use as sir flex a lot.

    it could also have been used by someone on zune or something like that as the gamertags were all linked at one point, so not sure if thats still the case.

    Unfortunately that means its inactive but claimed. If it stays inactive for a set amount of time I believe it becomes free to use again. I think unfortunately you will have to wait and check periodically and hopefully eventually it will be automatically
    cleared for reuse
