I haven't used my free gamertag change and it says I have to pay when I haven't usedd it

Hello SovietSteropes, i am guessing your account at first was not connected to Xbox live, it was an offline account? You then signed up to Xbox Live?

Normally when you sign up to Xbox live, your gamertag automatically changes but you are allowed to change your gamertag at least once for free. Once you have used the free gamertag change then you would have to pay.

If you haven't already used your free gamertag change, then i suggest you use that if it solves your problem.

If you haven't changed your Gamertag for a while(since the whole new Gamertag update) then you can change It for free but after you need to pay $10.

When was the Gamertag update?

That was sent to everyone, and that e-mail doesn't mean that you have a free gamertag change. It says "Want a name change?
Check if you have a free gamertag change."

That's sent to every person, new and existing. It's meant for new accounts to change their gamertag if they haven't already within that first 30 days. You'll need to pay for a gamertag change if you want one.

Maybe they're having problems. I know I can't finish the last 6 hours of my free trial of Andromeda because they claim I'm not signed into my own account.
