microphone not working very well while recording

Is it possible you accidentally pressed X while on a Party management screen?

That will mute you in this party.

Also try the following, to check if it's an issue with the microphone:

Create a new message to a friend (or any Gamertag, it doesn't matter as you don't really send a message).

Press the microphone icon to record a voice message.

Talk into your microphone, and when you have finished recording your message, listen to the message.

If that doesn't work, it's an issue with your microphone.

Has the microphone worked before? Or did you change headsets and microphones recently?

Try to disable your microphone while recording, because I think when you record something you cannot choose only screen record without audio.

It depends where you are trying to record to. I have had the same issue, the only real fix is to use a capture card on your PC and using the Xbox game bar will allow you to record your microphone use. or alternatively creating a live stream. correct me if
i am wrong someone but this the answer i got from a Microsoft agent.

Sadly Your Voice Cant Be Recorded When Recording.

The built-in capture option doesn't record voice, sadly. You would need to buy special equipment to record for YouTube. (Ex: Elgato, etc.)
