Xbox party chat issue. My mic does not work

I am having the same issue. With my headset I can hear game audio, if I'm in a party chat I can hear my friends talking but the mic doesn't work. My mic does work outside of the xbox app perfectly. The headphones and mic are set to default in the playback
devices. It's an issue with the app and it needs to be updated.

Is this issue only happening in Fortnite? Does your mic work in other games?

My son and his friends had this issue recently, where the mic worked in other games but not in Fortnite. So they had to use the Xbox Party Chat instead. After 2-3 days the issue seemed to resolve itself.

Here are a few things you can try:

First, fully sign out of the Xbox app and sign back in. Sometimes, a full session reset can clear party chat bugs.

Open the Xbox Game Bar by pressing Win + G, go to Audio, and double-check that the correct input device is set for Voice (not just Default or Communications) — make sure it matches your Arctis 5 mic exactly.

Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, and ensure the Xbox app and Game Bar both have microphone permissions enabled.

If you’re using the SteelSeries Sonar or GG software, try disabling that temporarily. Sometimes, those can create a virtual input/output conflict that Xbox doesn’t handle well.

Then, try this:

Go to Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer

Under the Xbox app, make sure both input and output are correctly set

Restart the Xbox app after confirming these settings

If that doesn’t work, reset the Xbox app:

Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps

Find Xbox, click the three dots, then choose Advanced options > Repair, and if needed, Reset

Lastly, if you're using Windows 11 24H2 (as it just recently started rolling out), some reports show that it introduced issues with voice in Xbox services. If all else fails, try installing the Xbox Insider Hub and opt into the Beta version of the app. That build often includes bug fixes not yet released to the main version.

This same issue has been ongoing for months. My son can hear his friends but his mic doesnt work.

The “fix” where you turn off the mic and push to talk in fortnite settings would occasionaly work bit now doesnt.

all other games and apps work with the mic.

The problem persists on another xbox signed in with his profile, using a different headset, so this is not a hardware issue.

other profiles on his xbox have no issues with sound/mic

this is an issue effecting certian profiles accross fortnite only party chat, xbox party chat works fine, which cant be used for crossplatform party play.

It seems the issue is related to the in-game chat option not working properly in a streaming format since your mic and headsets works in other formats and they work separately on different displays.

What happens if you invite your brother's profile to an Xbox Live party chat and communicate that way? Is there an audio or mic issue when forming a party chat and choosing to not speak in game chat?
