  1. Activated Minecraft Java on the wrong Microsoft account – username stuck on old account

    Hi,

I have a problem with my Minecraft account. I accidentally activated Minecraft: Java Edition on the wrong Microsoft account. I wanted to use my old Minecraft username, which I had set up when I had access to the game through Xbox Game Pass on another account.

That old account no longer has an active Game Pass, so I can't log into minecraft.net/profile and change the username. Now the username is "stuck" on that old account, and I can't use it on my new account where I redeemed the full version of the game.

    Current situation:

    • Account A – previously had Game Pass, I set my desired username there,
    • Account B – has the game license now, but I can't use the same username because it's taken,
    • Mojang support replied that they no longer assist with migration or username issues after December 18, 2023.
    Is there any way to:

    • Release or change the username from the old account?
    • Or transfer the Minecraft license to that account?
I'd really appreciate any help or suggestions.
    Thanks in advance!

    :)

Activated Minecraft Java on the wrong Microsoft account – username stuck on old account

    Hi Bartosz

Sorry to hear about that, however, gamertag and Java username are different, although both are linked to the same Microsoft account. Gamertag can be changed when you pay a fee, while Java username can be changed every 30 days.

Since your preferred Java username is attached to your old account, there's no way to release or remove that unless you change it so you can use it on your new account.

    For your reference: https://help.minecraft.net/hc/articles/44089501...

"Note: You can change your Java profile name once every 30 days. If you change your mind after changing your Java profile name, you can go back to your old name after waiting 30 days."

Note: This is a non-Microsoft website. The page appears to be providing accurate, safe information. Watch out for ads on the site that may advertise products frequently classified as PUP (Potentially Unwanted Products). Thoroughly research any product advertised on the site before you decide to download and install it.

At this point, you may want to get a subscription on your old account so you can release the username, or purchase the game if you opt too or just create a new username for your new profile which is way more unique and better.

Additionally, its not possible to transfer game license from one account to the other.

    Hi ghost_hotline

Recently, Microsoft started to integrate Minecraft Java accounts with Microsoft accounts. Could you have merged the wrong account at some point or signed in with the wrong account?

More details on usernames and Gamertags can be found here:

Paid for minecraft, only able to play demo

    Hello Kawaii bbe,

Welcome to Xbox Community Forum. Thank you for sharing your concern with us today and we hope that all is well.

We understand that you have change your username for your Microsoft account that was used to sign into Minecraft and the changes did not effect. Let us check on this together and sort this out. Rest assured, we will do anything in our capability to assist you with your concern.

If I may ask, what Minecraft version you have purchased? Is it Minecraft for Windows, or Minecraft Java Edition? Have you migrated your Mojang account to Microsoft account? If you have already migrated your account, use your Microsoft account to sign into Minecraft.

For Minecraft: Java Edition, users who have a Microsoft account can change their username for free at Log in | Minecraft. Navigate to My games and select the Minecraft: Java Edition dropdown box or you may refer to this link: Minecraft: Java Edition Username VS Gamertag FAQ – Home

As per your description, after changing the username and sign in the account, it seems that you do not own the game. Have you tried to sign in the account with old username to check if you can play with Minecraft just fine? That is to check if changing username with the version you have purchased is permitted. If you can sign in the old account with the old username and able to play the game, it would mean that changing the username of the version of Minecraft you have is not applicable. For any issue of signing in your Minecraft account, please refer to Minecraft support through this link: Submit a request – Home (minecraft.net)

We look forward to your response. Kindly let us know, if there is any misunderstanding or clarifications of our description by sending us a reply.

    Sincerely,

i bought a new minecraft account to alt on a world but it won't let me sign into my old account

    Hello,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

Is the account you used to purchase MineCraft Java Edition the same as the old version (Bedrock)?

If the two versions of the game are not under the same account, then you must use the corresponding account to log in to the corresponding version of the game.

If the issue is what I understand, please contact MineCraft Support to request a refund and re-log in with your old account and purchase the Java version.

If my understanding is wrong, please provide more information so that we can confirm the situation.

Just 2 ways to use Minecraft java, trough a Microsoft account with gamertag or Mojang account, so you must have one of the 2 and if the username it's different it's because you are using the wrong account, you can contact Mojang support and they can confirm this with you
