Can a stolen gamertag, not account, be returned?

I got scammed and my Gamertag was stolen. I still own and possess the account but my gamertag/name was stolen. Does Microsoft have the ability to return stolen gamertags that were taken? My account wasn't stolen but my gamertag was. I've had the gamertag name for 22 years on Xbox live.

that's very strange because if people pull that, they're typically after your entire account to resell it.

you've changed all of your passwords right? Engage two factor authentication?

Unfortunately once the gamer tag is abandoned it's open to anyone to take, and there's no mechanism to change that

I was keycode phished/scammed. I don't know the scammer. The only thing they managed to take was my name.

so if your account wasn't stolen, I assume that this was someone that you know who did this with your account

There's no way they can take it back from whoever has it now

they have to find the person who did it then return anything stolen then return the account
