How do you unfollow people that are also friends?

It seems like the whole list is bugged now. When I just follow someone, I can easily unfollow. If they follow me back, we become friends and I don't follow them anymore.

Now since the update I apparently have 120 friends, follow 40 people and nobody follows me, but the people I follow are actually friends and the only way to unfollow them would be to also remove them as friends. The option for unfollow just doesn't exist then. It doesn't make sense.
