controller not working in games rog ally

i have the Asus ROG ALLY Z1 extreme and i’ve tried two different controllers Ps4 and Xbox s and they dont work when i get into games. half the time they work as a mouse and then dont respond at all the other half. i’ve tried to trouble shoot the issues and tried a bunch of suggestions from youtube but nothing seems to work for when i want to dock my device and switch to a wireless controller. i’ve even tried the Xbox control wired but still no response in games especially Fortnite, i’ve even tried a few Xbox games through the app on pc.

the only thing that seems to consistently work is the controls on the device itself even though im using a different controller connected wired or bluetooth
